Cuttlefish sightings, coastal hikes, and seafront camping along the Eyre Peninsula.
Whyalla is one of South Australia’s most unique destinations for wildlife watching. From May through August, this coastal city hosts the annual migration of giant Australian cuttlefish (the only place in the world where you can watch the natural phenomenon) while curious dolphins swim right into Whyalla harbour year-round. At the northeastern gateway to the Eyre Peninsula, the port city is the fourth largest in the state and blessed with an average of 300 sunny days a year, making it the ideal basecamp for campers and road-trippers. Check into a caravan park or tourist park in town, make the most of the low-cost campgrounds around nearby Fitzgerald Bay and Point Lowly, or snag a spot at a quiet Hipcamp away from the crowds. When it’s time to hit the road, the coastal hikes and campgrounds of Lincoln National Park and Coffin Bay National Park are just a short drive away.
