Krystal Waters

3 sites · RVs, Tents26 acres · San Remo, VIC
Located on Phillip Island Road just before the town of San Remo and the bridge to Phillip Island. The property is 26 acres with beach frontage to Western Port Bay and views of French Island. The land has been used for pasture, mostly for cattle, with a large dam wall which at one time had a small gauge train track on top running to the old port of San Remo. These days the property is used as a hobby farm with a few cattle, a vegetable garden, some fruit trees, and replanting of native trees. We offer three RV/tent sites on the property, with our caretaker also residing onsite. While the sites ensure privacy, guests may encounter others during their stay since restroom facilities are shared among all campers. There is 1 shower with hot water and 1 flushing toilet. Site 1 stands apart from the other two sites, equipped with both power and water. Sites 2 and 3 are situated 20 meters apart, however, guests can spread out more if they do not need power. We're currently in the process of expanding our property, constructing several new sheds. As a result, you might notice building materials on-site. We've made every effort to separate these materials from the campsites and keep them out of the way. Our site is on a very busy main road and is easy to miss if you’re driving fast. I have a big sign on our gate but you may need to slow down in order to see it! The GPS should guide you right to the property. Please note, because of our elevated location the winds can be strong at times - but the views make it worth it in our opinion!

Mt Martha Bushland Hideaway

3 sites · RVs, Tents5 acres · Mount Martha, VIC
This property was originally part of a large farmland, divided into 5 acre lots. When we purchased in 1997, there wasn't a single tree on the place. Over the years, we have revegetated the property with native and indigenous bushland, created a wetland that attracts many native animals including birds, lizards, possums and frogs to name a few. Enjoy a hidden country escape on our 5 acre property on the Mornington Peninsula. Property features a wetland with jetty, roaming peacocks, chickens and sheep in an open woodland setting. A relaxed country atmosphere conveniently located near beaches, wineries, op shops and restaurants. Up to 3 sites available (max 1 caravan/camper or 2 tents/dwellings per site) Ideal for groups or individual campers. Our property is surrounded on two sides by reserve, the Balcombe Creek and bushland. BYO gear and set up in the paddock. We will meet you on arrival and direct you to the campsites. Access to a flushing toilet and a cold water tap/cold water shower with potable drinking water. We prefer no dogs due to peacocks and sheep and our own dogs... but please ask before booking anyway, and we will accommodate on a case-by-case basis. We are a 5 to 10-minute drive to the beautiful bay beaches of Mornington and Mt Martha and a 20-minute drive to Westernport bay and the surf beaches. Close to the nearly 60 wineries on the Mornington Peninsula, an abundance of restaurants, Peninsula Hot Springs and other attractions such as Arthurs Sea Eagle cable car, Enchanted Maze Garden, and many amazing bush walks.

The Wak Paddock

5 sites · RVs, Tents1 acre · Kongwak, VIC
The Wak is a well-maintained 1 acre vacant paddock where you can park your caravan or pitch a tent and sleep under the stars. It's a simple bush camping base positioned on the river flats in which to explore the beautiful surrounds of Kongwak. It's a chance at escapism hugged by velvet cattle-dotted hills and endless picturesque greenery. Please note: no facilities. Please arrive during daylight hours so as not to disturb others on the paddock. Driving on the paddock in the dark in unfamiliar territory adds unnecessary risk to others eg. collisions with swags. If this isn't possible, please set up camp in the house yard away from others. On arrival please call/text 0488091478 if you're unsure whether you're in the correct paddock. Our property is only 2 acres in total. The rest of the land belongs to busy farmers who don't want to be disturbed by lost guests trespassing on their land. Yes, that has actually happened! Entry is the right-hand-side gate at the end of Wolonga Estate Road. You'll see two cement troughs side-by-side sitting in the paddock. Located just 5 mins from the village where the vintage-inspired Kongwak Market is held every Sunday from 10-2pm. There's views of the green hills and beautiful beef and dairy cattle are rotated from paddock to paddock in nearby fields. They're the best kept cows you've ever seen! A curious fox has also been known to sneakily visit campers onsite. He's harmless but likes to steal the odd shoe. It's best to pack away any small items and food stuffs. 10-15 mins from Inverloch. 15 mins from Wonthaggi. 15 mins from Korumburra. 20 mins from Loch. 20 mins from Leongatha.

The best camping near Mornington Peninsula National Park guide

Overview

About

A favourite seaside escape for city dwellers, Mornington Peninsula National Park is an easy drive south of Melbourne. Australia’s casual surfers flock here to ride the waves at Gunnamatta, Flinders, and Point Leo beaches, while hikers who prefer to stay dry can soak up sweeping views of Bass Strait on the 18-kilometre Coastal Walk stretching from Cape Schanck to Portsea. Along the area’s sheltered northern coastline, foreshore camping areas feather out from colourful seaside villages like Sorrento, Blairgowrie, Rye, and Dromana.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for families: The largest foreshore spot with more than 800 campsites, Rosebud Foreshore Campground stretches along Port Phillip Bay and features kids’ play structures and shady picnic lawns.
  • Best for boaters: Sorrento is close to boat ramps and the Queenscliff ferry for easy access to the Bellarine Peninsula.
  • Best for wildlife watchers: Inland at Green’s Bush, Lightwood Camping Area is home to wallabies, kangaroos, and birdlife.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. For large campgrounds like Rosebud, Rye, and Sorento, book a site online via the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s website. Camping permits are required and must be displayed at your site.
  2. Avoid the Christmas season (late December through January) and other holidays for lower camping fees and fewer crowds.
  3. Summer peak season reservations must be booked before the end of the current year’s peak season and require a deposit. If you’re too late, you can grab a spot on the waitlist.

When to go

Foreshore camping is open between late October and April each year, with peak season running during the Australian summer holidays (after Christmas), Easter, Labour Day, and the Melbourne Cup weekend (the last weekend in October). Go midweek or during shoulder season (February and March) for more room to roam while still enjoying warm weather. If you’re planning to visit Mornington Peninsula restaurants and wineries, note that many are closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Know before you go

  • Fires, including barbecues, are banned at all Mornington Peninsula camping areas. Pack a gas stove for cooking instead.
  • Hot showers and toilet blocks are available at Rosebud, Rye, and Sorrento campgrounds.
  • Campsites at Rosebud are not clearly marked, so get a map and ask for directions from the ranger’s office.
  • Book a pup sitter, as dogs and other pets are not welcome at camping areas.
