Oak Flat Campground
before we can provide a recommendation.
Description

Rustic and unpaved, Oak Flat Campground is the perfect primitive site if you want to stay near major highways. The camping area is flat with nice tree cover, and a “diamond in the rough” for botanists and those hoping to catch sight of the resident deer, especially in the Spring.

Bring your camera to capture the vistas, fishing is to be had at Frenchman’s Flat 2.5 miles from the bottom of the hill, and if you’re uploading evidence of your catch—there’s a nearby cell phone tower. As a bonus, the meandering road through the campground is ideal for campers and guests that get by with a wheeled walker.

If you’re arriving along Old 99, there is no sign declaring that you’ve reached “Oak Flat Campground”, but there is a sign for a maintenance area and it’s one of the few places along the road to turn left—venture up the hill a bit and you’re there! A campfire permit is required, bear-proof food storage lockers and bear-proof trash boxes are provided, and bring water and beer to share with the other campers, it’s an open-space! While the area is first-come first-serve, you will need to pick up a Forest Adventure Pass (inexpensive and easily found at the local 7-11 in nearby Castaic).
