Discover the most magical spots to pitch your tent or park your rig on your next Elk Island Provincial Park adventure.
Even with no overnight stays allowed, you’ll find no crowds during visits to this tiny island park.
Just a bit north of Grand Beach, Lake Winnipeg’s Elk Island Provincial Park covers a small spit of beach on the mainland and a 9-square-kilometre island set a little over a kilometre offshore. In winter, the park offers great spots for snowshoeing or snowmobiling. Depending on the water levels in the summer months, you can wade in the lake or boat to the island. Spend the day exploring the wilderness, bird watching, or hiking along the lakeside trail, where you’ll find sandy beaches and boulders in muted colours, all perfect for a picnic lunch.
The park is accessible for day trips year-round. It’s undeveloped with no services, so you’ll need to bring everything you need for your wilderness day trip. Make sure you dress and prepare for the temperamental Manitoba weather—particularly if going in winter. In late fall and early spring, when the ice is freezing and thawing, it can be dangerous to walk across the lake. Look for cracks in the ice and ensure you follow proper safety precautions.
