The best camping near Gros Morne National Park

Gros Morne may well be the most spectacular national park in Atlantic Canada. Vast fjords give way to otherworldly tabletop mountains, exposed earth, beaches, lakes, and gorgeous hikes through forests teeming with flora and fauna. Moose sightings are common, and you might encounter beavers, caribou, beavers, or bears. You’ll also find seaside towns nearby and plenty of ways to interact with local culture at this UNESCO World Heritage site.

• Best for big groups: Berry Hill Campground can accommodate group camping for up to 25. 
• Best for classic park views: Trout River offers Tablelands mountain views across Trout River Pond.

1. Gros Morne is one of Canada’s most highly revered campgrounds, and spaces book up fast when the Parks Canada online booking system opens in early January. Premium spots are snapped up in the first few hours, especially the rustic cabins and oTENTiks.
2. You may be in luck turning up with your tent at some campgrounds, but be sure to get there as soon as bookings open if you’re looking for a first-come, first-served spot.

Gros Morne is beautiful any time of year, but the best time of year to plan any Newfoundland trip is mid-May to late October. It may well still be chilly and damp in June, so pack appropriately, but that’s when you have the best chance of seeing icebergs floating by. July and August are the best months for whale spotting, and come fall, the park is ablaze in reds and golds as the leaves turn and trails are less busy.

• The weather can change instantly in Gros Morne. Dress in layers, and make sure to have waterproof gear before tackling a long hike. 
• Some Gros Morne National Park sites may offer wifi, but cell service is limited, so bring a map to help you find your way around.
• Gros Morne is pretty wild, and few areas are wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.
• The town of Rocky Harbour is a great spot to grab a seafood supper, or browse galleries filled with local goods.
