The best camping near Cold Lake Provincial Park

Cold Lake Provincial Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts looking to avoid big crowds. Despite its idyllic location along one of Alberta’s largest lakes, it’s rare to encounter a swarm of other travellers here. Explore from the seat of your canoe, bike through the area’s mixed woods and boreal forests, stroll along one of the park’s sandy beaches, or try your hand at catching pike, perch, lake trout, and walleye. If you like birds, have your binoculars on hand—the lake is home to dozens of migratory species. Some of the other impressive residents include coyotes, bears, and lynxes. The park’s sole campground, Cold Lake Campground, features serviced sites, walk-in tenting, group-use areas, and access to nine kilometres of easy trails.

1. Cold Lake Campground requires reservations, but it's usually easy to get a spot. Even for peak summer reservations, you shouldn't have to book months in advance. However, it’s always a good idea to check at least a few days ahead of your trip.

Cold Lake Provincial Park is great any time. Summer is perfect for enjoying the beaches while the area gets even quieter in May and October, increasing your chances of spotting a moose or a lynx. However, if you’re interested in birds, even just the teeniest bit, then visit in late July and early August when the fall migration is in full swing. The area’s pelicans, cormorants, and gulls won’t disappoint.

• The unserviced walk-in tent sites are only accessible by foot. Be prepared to lug your gear a short distance from the nearest parking area. 
• If you're exhausted from a day of exploring and don't have the energy to whip out the grill, the nearby city of Cold Lake has plenty of restaurants and cafes. 
• Don't forget your swimsuit! The beaches on the shores of Cold Lake might be the best in Alberta. Lund’s Point beach is our favourite, and it's so close to the campground. Kinosoo Beach, just down the road, is also a good choice with its playground, splash park, and water equipment rentals.
