Local History Located in the heart of the province, Falls Lake, which borders our development and one our of private beach is located on, is the last in a chain of numerous lakes, which are the source waters for the Avon River. Falls lake is so named for the falls that once existed where the dam was built at the North end of the lake in 1926. Salmon could not jump the falls and spawned at the base. The dam increased the water depth up to twenty feet (approximately seven meters). Underneath this lake at the North end is Pugley’s Lumber Mill, built in the late 1800’s. Much lumber was cut in the Vaughan area and sluiced down Mint River and Mockingee Lake to the mill. Lumber was sluiced around the falls down Avon River to Windsor, where it was loaded onto boats for export. With the lake levels reduced by fifteen feet one can see the remnants of what was a very busy lumber camp. In the early 1900’s a forest fire started in the New Ross area and ravaged the mill and all the lands surrounding this lake extending to Martock. Spared were the trees on the South side of Mint River and others protected by bogs and favorable winds. This fire explains why there are few sizable evergreen trees on the lake. Hardwood like birch, maple, ash and oak are the first to reappear after forest fires. The softwood including the pines, spruce, fir and hemlock finally emerge years later. The bareness of hardwoods and the shape of the valley create a strong echo effect on this narrow lake. The rock type of Falls Lake area is mainly granite, creating the extensive bedrock and rock faces that are evident on the shoreline and surrounding hills. There is also rich mineralization in the New Ross/Leminster area, including West Falls. The Department of Natural Resources has an excellent map detailing minerals and their location. The most recent mining interest was 1979-1981, when uranium exploration was conducted on both sides of the Falls Lake by the Aquitaine Company of Canada. The Falls Lake area, Vaughan and Leminster are all areas of known uranium deposits. The extensive exploration on the West side resulted in a road starting at the entry now used by Falls Lake West development but continuing to the upper Levy Meadows still waters. A moratorium on uranium exploration prevented activation of mining sites in the early 1980’s. Sasha's Sanctuary

1 site · RV, Tent15 acres · Mates Corner, NB
Hi! My name is Sasha! I'm a 10-year-old Black Lab! I know what you’re thinking, an old dog can't learn new tricks but here I am! Hip Camp Hooray! My unique, 15-acre home is a sanctuary away from all the hustle and bustle of dog-eat-dog life! It truly is my little piece of paradise, and I can’t help but want to share it with you! My favorite part is the 3-acre natural swimming quarry!! I love to cool off on those stifling hot summer days, nothing better! Your site is cozied right up to the edge of my beautiful pond with a freshly sodded soft spot for your tent and nestled behind a large hill (with your own driveway entrance) to make sure your stay is as secluded and serene as possible! My Mom and Dad, Pamela & Christoph, have built you a fancy new outhouse only steps away so no need to relieve yourself in some old bucket, forest hole (unless it’s a squirrel hole!🙁) or tall grass! They also have a sitting area set up! Feel free to walk my 20 minute loop around the pond, past peaceful fields and through sheltered paths that lead you right back to your site! All that walking keeps me 10 years young! Afterwards you can snuggle in beside the firepit I dug and I’ll even fetch you some sticks for your cozy bon fire! Nights are super relaxing with mirror still waters and dark night star gazing! I'm super pumped to share it with you! (Your little friends are welcome too, as naturally we are furry friendly.) Oh yeah, my Parents said don’t forget to tell you two things; We are in Straight Shores, Rural Southeast NB, 1km off Highway 15. We are centrally located within 20 minutes or less of NS, PEI, Sackville and Shediac, 35 minutes from big Ol Moncton and within 5-10 minutes of the villages of Port Elgin and Cap Pele! (Blah, Blah, Blah....Not that you’ll want to go anywhere after setting up in heaven! 😉 ) A canoe and/or fishing rods are available upon request for an additional fee of $5/canoe, $5/rods! Super deal for real! (My brother said star gazing at night in the canoe is incredible with the stars reflecting in the water! And the pond is stocked full of small mouth bass! I’ve tried to catch those little basses myself but just can’t swim quick enough! You’ll have much better luck with my Dad’s rods!) Don’t forget this old dog is full of new tricks so I welcome your feedback and suggestions on how to make my little piece of paradise even more perfect! Off to collect those bon fire sticks for ya! All YOU have to do now is click ‘Reserve’ and get your tails here to relax and chill! See you soon! Cheers, Sasha

Big Blue On The Bay

2 sites · RVs, Tents4 acres · Maitland, NS
"Big Blue" sits atop a lawn covered hill on the shore of the Cobequid Bay. A grove of fir and pine trees offer a sense of woodland solitude and fairies. The energy is magical. You can enjoy a front row seat or amble down over the lawn to sit on the end of the public wharf to watch the tidal bore squeeze into the mouth of the Shubenacadie River. It won't be long and you can marvel at the force of the water as it turns and begins to pour back toward the Bay of Fundy. Walk across the dyke to reach the oldest continually operating general store in North America - Frieze and Roy. Beyond the Wharf, a locally stocked craft shop borders us on the easterly side of the lawn. Next to it you will find Dawson Dowel Picnic Park, a playground and basketball court. On the westerly side of the driveway you there is a marsh area. The remnants of the shipyard where the WD Lawrence was built in the 1800's can be seen poking through the sand on the beach directly in front of the marsh. At low tide you can walk for miles in a westerly direction. Always be Tide Aware! Across the road from the marsh is the residence of WD Lawrence himself. It is a provincial museum. Directly across from Big Blue is a Ducks Unlimited pond. The sound of the geese and ducks can be heard 24 hours a day! There is a path that circumvents most of the pond. Adjacent to the Lawrence House parking lot there is an observatory where you can linger and watch the shenanigans of the occasional muskrat or possibly a beaver. The washrooms are accessed through a side door on the verandah of the main house. There are three showers and three toilets. If happen to be missing your "workout" there is a treadmill and exercise bike available to use. Outdoor fire regulations are strictly adhered to. There is a BBQ available for a small fee. Other perks (subject to scheduling) available at an additional cost might include: In-house Concerts; Reiki Sessions; Workshops and Ceremonies
