Retro Staycations near Ryde on the Isle of Wight

Old school camping and super-cool retro glamping is on offer at this site near Ryde on the Isle of Wight. Whichever way you choose to stay, you can’t help but be wowed by the fleet of shiny Airstream caravans that make up the glamping accommodation at Retro Staycations. Parked up around the edge of the field, they offer a hint – or should that be a glint? – of life on the road in 1950s and 1960s America. And while it’s very much a vintage experience that’s on offer, each trailer has been lovingly restored to provide a comfortable place to stay that’s Instagrammable for the travellers of today.

There are six vintage caravans to choose from, ranging from Bing, the 1946 Spartan Manor, to Freya, a 1970 Sovereign Airstream. The smallest sleeps two; the largest can fit a family of up to six. Each has a functioning kitchenette and shower and each is provided with beds and towels for your stay. The toilets (and more showers) are in a washroom a short walk away. These are shared with those using the site’s camping pitches, which are suitable for tents, campervans or motorhomes. They are grassy and can be provided with electric hook-up or without. The site is campfire friendly and, if you’re staying in one of the site’s vans, you have a picnic bench, deckchairs, and an off-ground fire pit provided. If you’re camping you’ll need to bring your own but logs are for sale on site.

American Airstream Glamping and Retro Staycations are on a working farm close to Brading Downs which is a lovely place for a walk, just a couple of miles from here. This is the Isle of Wight, just 25 miles at its widest point and 14 miles top to bottom, so anywhere that you might want to visit on the island is within reach. That includes the nearby town of Ryde with its sandy beaches, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, which you can join at Havenstreet, a couple of miles away, and Queen Victoria’s former home at Osborne House, eight miles north of here.

Traditional grass camping pitch
Lovely quiet pitch with a large space in the middle for the kids to run. All the tents and campers are around the outside. Basic but peaceful campsite. Lady who welcomed us was so nice! Recommend

A unique glamping retreat in a fleet of sleek, authentic American Airstreams.   The spacious site is situated in a pretty meadow in the countryside on a working farm providing a peaceful and hidden spot on the Isle of Wight. It’s the ideal spot to relax and unwind.   Situated just off the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight is easy to get to and a wonderful holiday destination to explore all year round.   Retro Staycations is well located just outside of the picturesque seafront town of Ryde, the largest town on the Island. Boasting fine Georgian and Victorian buildings, a rich mix of thriving independent pubs and restaurants, Ryde is best known for its award-winning golden sand beaches, seafront promenade and marina. The town offers great transport links to all areas of the Island. Ryde is just a short crossing from the mainland and offers a wonderfully laid-back vibe and a nostalgic holiday escape. Special discounted ferry travel is available to all guests! There are several classic gleaming silver vintage Airstream caravans. Two berth, three berth and four berth vans are available along with one six berth Airstream. 𝗞𝗜𝗗𝗦 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘! 👫 Whilst retaining many of their original 1940s-1970s features, the vans provide a vibrant retro style that’s subtly equipped for the 21st century camper. Each classic caravan offers comfy beds, hot showers and those all-important glamping accessories. Reflecting the scenic views of nearby Brading Downs in their polished exteriors, the Airstreams are a genuine sight to behold. Imported directly from the USA, their curvy retro shape and shimmering exteriors are unlike anything else you’ll see on the Island. Onboard facilities include fully-equipped micro-kitchens containing fridges, cookers, heaters and toasters. Freshly laundered white bed linen and towels are supplied, and each caravan has its own outdoor picnic bench with parasol, classic deck chairs as well as a BBQ and fire pit. The vans have onboard showers and there is a heated toilet block containing separate male/female facilities and additional showers not far from your accommodation. The family-run farm has a shop containing local produce including eggs, milk, beef, pork and a wide variety of freshly picked vegetables. You can pre-order breakfast baskets with locally sourced ingredients grown and reared directly on the farm. Around the farm, you’ll see ducks, sheep, lambs, pigs, cows and chickens, plus an abundance of wildlife, from Isle of Wight red squirrels, rabbits, woodpeckers and more. The site also offers an additional 8 pitches for tents, camper vans and touring vehicles with optional electric and water hookups. It is possible to hire the whole site for your special event or celebration. Local activities include; miles of soft sandy beaches, heritage steam railway, Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum, Osborne House (Queen Victoria's royal palace by the sea), tree climbing, all-weather go-karting, Wight Water Adventure Watersports, Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, walking, running, cycling, swimming pool, a gym, golf course, local markets and car boot sales, kids theme parks and attractions, plus numerous events throughout the year.
Nearby attractions

The seaside resort of Ryde is less than two miles from Ashey where American Airstream Glamping and Retro Staycations is based. The town is home to all the usual seaside attractions starting, of course, with its sandy beach. There’s mini golf, amusements and the incredibly long Ryde Pier. There’s also a small town museum and the Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum. For something a bit more active, head to Appley Park on the outskirts of town for Goodleaf Climbing where you can learn the ropes in an old oak tree. The Isle of Wight Steam Railway is another transport-based attraction which might complement your stay in a vintage caravan. Although it passes close by the campsite, the best place to get on board its heritage trains is at Havenstreet, which is still less than three miles away. There are countless other attractions on the Isle Of Wight with some of the closest being Queen Victoria’s Osborne House (eight miles), Monkey Haven (seven miles) and Brading Roman Villa (four miles).

Food and drink

Hazelgrove Farm, on which Retro Staycations is based, is a working farm and there’s a handy farm shop with produce that’s as sustainable as it gets – much of it directly from the fields around you. Hazelgrove eggs, meat and veg can all be purchased here along with other local produce from nearby farms and producers. If you want to, you can order breakfast box in advance from your hosts. For a meal out, you are spoilt for choice in Ryde where there are plenty of options just five minute’s drive down the road.
