Shepherd’s huts in pretty parkland in the Oxfordshire countryside

Enjoy a taste of life in a rural Oxfordshire village with a stay at Hendred Farm Huts. These little hideaways on a country estate give you the chance to unwind surrounded by wildlife and farmers’ fields, with a lovely gastro pub a short wander away. Longer wanders are also recommended around here as East Hendred, where the huts are situated, is in the Vale of the White Horse. It’s a lovely part of the North Wessex Downs that’s criss-crossed by ancient trackways and peppered by historic earthworks that add interest to any days out.

There are three huts on site, quaintly named Dorothy, Agatha and Martha. They look totally at home in the countryside setting and the interior reflects that too: a stable door, whitewashed timber-clad walls, a butler sink and a log burner. The huts are off grid but have solar panels to power a fridge, a Roberts radio and lights. It’s all rather nostalgic and well connected to the outdoors where you can cook on a campfire that’s sheltered and protected by a woven hazel fence. That provides a little separation from the neighbours – though the huts are well spread out in this tree-lined parkland meadow anyway and the grass is allowed to grow long in between.

Each hut sleeps two and dogs are welcome. It’s a good place for them – and anyone who likes a walk. The obvious place for that is The Ridgeway, the national trail that runs along the North Wessex Downs, not far from here. Another good place is to set off on a route around the 3,000-year-old Uffington White Horse that gives the area its name. Newbury and Oxford are both within half an hour’s drive, the market towns of Wantage and Didcot much closer than that. All are options for days out, if you don’t mind getting in the car. But, actually, you don’t have to have a car to come here. Didcot train station is just five miles away and host, Alexandra, is willing to pick you up (if arranged in advance). From London, the journey can be less than 40 minutes making this an excellent place for a car-free escape to the country.

Ssssh don’t tell anyone!
We are in two minds with this review, we loved it so much we don’t want to share with others but at the same time feel it’s our duty to let everyone know what a gem this place is! From the initial communication with Ali to the accommodation, location, the local pub, the locals themselves , we can fault absolutely nothing. The only downside was the fact we had to leave. We look forward to returning again soon!

The location is fantastic - pictures can’t do it justice! The cabin was beautifully equipped & there was even milk in the fridge for a much needed cup of tea upon arrival. Couldn’t recommend this enough. We will definitely be back.

The whole experience was fabulous! The field was calm and quiet but close to a lovely pub. It had everything you need to get away from a busy life and relax. We loved sitting out and listening to the birds and our dog loved the long grass for exploring!

Lovely shepherds hut. It was a great location in a secluded spot and very close to the local pub! We had a brilliant time there and would certainly visit again.

Hendred Farm Huts allow you to escape from the daily grind. Come here and you can treat yourself to a relaxing stay in one of our conveniently located shepherds huts. Each combines a traditionally hand crafted interior with the comforts you would expect from a modern glamping experience. They in parkland on the historic Hendred Estate in East Hendred village, in the heart of glorious South Oxfordshire countryside, a stones throw from the Ridgeway and only 55 minutes from London
Nearby attractions

Hendred Huts are on the outskirts of the village of East Hendred midway between the market towns of Wantage and Didcot (both around five miles). A couple of miles south of the village is The Ridgeway National Trail which is an excellent route to use for a walk. You can drive to Scutchamer’s Knob car park to join it – and check out the Iron Age roundbarrow while you’re there, then head east towards Grim’s Ditch (which is prettier than it sounds) or west towards a good pub in Ilsley. The Bronze Age chalk figure of the Uffington White Horse is 11 miles from site, perhaps the most famous of many old earthworks within this part of the North Wessex Downs National Landscape. There’s more recent history preserved in Pendon Museum (nine miles), at Didcot Railway Centre (five miles) and at the National Trust’s Ashdown estate where there’s an unusual 17th century Dutch house within a wooded estate. Oxford is 13 miles from the site and Newbury is 16 miles away.

Food and drink

One of the big bonuses of a stay at Hendred Farm Huts is that the excellent village pub, The Eyston Arms (also owned by your hosts) is a very short walk away. In fact, there’s a gate from the field straight into the pub car park so it’s an easy option for a dinner out and has a menu of good food. There’s another pub in the village, The Wheatsheaf, that’s also recommended for good-value pub classics. For a longer walk with a pub at the end (or a short drive), you could head for the pretty village of Ilsley (seven miles) and The Harrow, a country pub with views of the village cricket green. The Bell in Aldworth (11 miles) is worth visiting for its chocolate-box appeal, real ales and excellent ploughmans. If you want to cook at your hut, Hendred Village Stores stocks all the basics and Q Gardens Farm Shop (two miles) is the place to head for if you want farm-fresh meats, fruit and vegetables. There are supermarkets in the market town of Wantage (five miles).
