Nearly wild camping in the North Pennines

The Old Chapel Campsite offers back-to-basics camping in the Cumbrian countryside. Host, Ted, has simply set up a water supply and plonked a portable toilet in a grassy one-acre field on his smallholding to see if anyone wants to come. The answer is a resounding yes! This refreshingly simple site is a hit with people who love the outdoors. It may not have a swimming pool but there’s a brook that babbles by. There’s no designated children’s play area but there’s plenty of space to run around—as well as turkeys, chickens, and ducks tottering about. And, no, it doesn’t have a bar, but from sunrise to sunset, you can drink in lovely views.

Surrounded by fells, The Old Chapel Campsite sits on the edge of the North Pennines. This is the quiet side of Cumbria, it’s not far from the tourist trails through the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales but far enough to be peaceful. From here, a short drive will take you into either but there’s plenty of stunning scenery to explore closer to home as well. You can walk from site up onto Murton Pike and the higher fells beyond. In fact, if you’re walking the Pennine Way, this site makes a good stopping off point close to High Cup Nick.

Open from Easter to the end of September, this campsite is just the ticket if you like things on the wilder side—but still comes with a warm welcome. Ted is a lovely host who’ll welcome you to site by opening the farm gate into his field. He’ll sell you eggs, hire you a fire pit, and point you in the direction of The Stag Inn in nearby Dufton if you don’t fancy a campfire dinner. This is a wholesome place to stay, where dogs on leads are welcome. It can just as easily be the base for a peaceful holiday spent entirely here in the Eden Valley and North Pennines as a lovely place to retreat to after days in the nearby national parks.

The farm warmly welcomes families and provides essential amenities such as portable toilets, a hand-washing point, and a standpipe with clean tap water. The presence of turkeys, chickens, and ducks ensures a bountiful supply of fresh eggs, perfect for a delightful cooked breakfast. For your convenience, the nearby village is renowned for its peaceful ambiance, while the small town of Appleby-in-Westmorland and Dufton, with their inviting café and pub serving delectable homecooked meals, are within a 10 to 15-minute drive. When you're ready to embark on an adventure, the majestic Murton Fell awaits just a short 10-minute walk from the site, offering an invigorating hiking experience.

Old Chapel campsite
Great little visit to Teds campsite, firstly what a lovely guy! Meets you on arrival, sees you settled in and catches up with you later on in the day for 5mins. Nice walk up Murton Pike, which gives a fantastic view point, well worth the effort it takes to get up there. Toilet is clean, water available and well kept site, not as wild a location as we originally thought but didn’t dampen the experience. Will be back at somepoint to explore the fells further.

Old Chapel campsite
The old chapel campsite is a hidden gem (and so is Ted)! Ted’s expert knowledge of the local area and recommendations helped us navigate the idyllic scenery that surrounds the campsite. Ted greeted us at arrival and made us feel instantly at home. The ‘back to basics’ site is wonderful for a tech-free weekend (although I think this was the only area in the whole of Cumbria with 4G and phone reception!!) whilst surrounded by the wildlife and natural beauty of the fells. Ted offers fresh eggs and a fire pit on return. Ted’s land is perfect for a peaceful weekend under the stars and is well connected to the Lake District. We cannot wait to return :)

Nearby attractions

The Old Chapel Campsite is in the Eden Valley, on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with fell walking all around. You can walk from site and find yourself on Murton Fell within 10 minutes. The Pennine Way long-distance national trail passes through the pretty village of Dufton, three miles away. It’s just a little further to the market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. The edges of two national parks, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District are both within half an hour’s drive of site too – opening up yet more opportunities for outdoor adventure and sightseeing.

Food and drink

You can buy eggs on site at The Old Chapel Campsite but for more than that you’ll have to head further afield as there’s no shop in Murton or nearby Dufton. Appleby-in-Westmoreland, four miles way, has a good selection of shops including a Co-op. Dufton (just under three miles away) does have a pub: The Stag, which does great pub grub and there are plenty of options for eating out in Appleby too.
