Adventurous mountain-top camping on a hill farm in North Wales

We often hear about 'almost wild camping' sites but Mynydd Derwydd Wildcamping is as close to the real deal as we’ve come across yet. Out here on a North Welsh hill farm, you are given the location of the gate to the farm and left to your own devices. If you’ve got a 4x4, then you can drive straight to the top of 350-metre Mynydd Ucha and choose a spot to pitch your tent with views all the way to Snowdon, some 26 miles away. In fact, according to your host, hill farmer Llŷr, you can see half of North Wales from up here. But, amongst all that, don’t count on seeing him. He’ll be busy tending sheep on this 1,600-acre farm and, unless you need him, he’ll leave you to enjoy your own bit of wild in North Wales.

So what makes Mynydd Derwydd a campsite? Not much, is the answer. Llŷr’s permission is the first thing. That’s given on the basis that you agree to leave no trace of your stay. To that end, you can buy logs and hire an off-ground fire pit but you mustn’t light fires on the ground. Llŷr also provides access to a tap and a loo – but you need to bring your own loo roll and be prepared for a walk. How far, depends on where you pitch. As well as Mynydd Ucha (a 15 minute walk), there’s the more accessible Mynydd Pen or sheltered Meadow Ddole (five minutes from the facilities). Wherever you go, you won’t be crowded as 250 acres of land is counted as the campsite and only 10 bookings are allowed at a time.

The site backs on to the vast Clocaenog Forest. You can walk there and not see a soul all day but you can also temper your solitude with days in busier spots. The hike up Snowdon for example, is just 40 minutes’ drive away as are the adventures at Zip World. Stay here for the wild camping experience of sleeping under the stars, cooking on the campfire and being by yourself…. But know that if it all gets too wild, there’s always The Crown Inn a mile down the road.

Find us 20 minutes from Snowdonia National Park, 10 minutes from the Vale of Clwyd, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and bordering the 16,000 acres of Clocaenog Forest. We have 3 camping grounds around the farm: THE HIGH MOUNTAIN – MYNYDD UCHA This is the main site, only 8 pitches on 80 acres of mountain with views towards the Berwyn and Snowdonia ranges including the peak of Arenig Fawr. Some pitches will accommodate 2 – 3 tents for small groups. THE TOP MOUNTAIN – MYNYDD PEN Views towards the Berwyn Range. 2-3 pitches, 1 pitch with good shelter, ideal for sole use by larger groups. THE MEADOW – DDOLE Situated next to a small stream, Nant Derwydd, good shelter and views of the Valley of Llanfihangel and Mwdwl Eithin. 1 pitch, ideal for sole use by larger groups. Access to all pitches is only possible in a 4 x 4 vehicle. We do have off road parking and use of a wheelbarrow for guests without a 4 x 4. We also offer a Sherpa Service to take your belongings up to and off your pitch if you don’t feel like carrying them.

Camping on Llŷr’s land was very peaceful. There were other campers dotted around but spaced apart so you had tranquility. It was lovely hearing the sheep grazing on the grass around you. Beautiful views and we would definitely stay here again. Hywel was very friendly and helpful as well.

Great location, freedom of the site to find your own pitch. Views were incredible! The firepit was a nice added touch with a good amount of firewood. Communication with the site was spot on, no complaints! Will definitely be revisiting

Mynydd Derwydd translate to Wise Mountain Mynydd Derwydd is a unique campsite situated on the mountains of our family farm, in the heart of North Wales. Bookings are limited to allow our guests to enjoy the exclusive experience this special place offers. With a few essential facilities Mynydd Derwydd really is about escaping back to nature. It is all about mountain views, starry night skies, peace, fresh air and your own space. Lots of space. The sun shines brightest from the peaks of mountains
Nearby attractions

Beyond Mynydd Derwydd is Clocaenog Forest, which stretches across 16,000 acres. You can walk straight from the farm into the trees. At Lyn Brenig, eight miles from the farm, you can hire bikes, go fishing and look out for ospreys. The farm’s location in the middle of North Wales is midway between the Clwydian Range and Snowdonia National Park so visiting places in either is easily possible on a day trip. It takes about 40 minutes to drive to Pen-y-Pass on the east side of Snowdon itself from where you can choose from one of two paths up the mountain; the Miner’s or the Pyg Track. It’s a similar distance to Zip World where you can ride the longest zip line in Europe.

Food and drink

Eggs are for sale from an honesty box on the road just outside the campsite but for more than that head to the closest shop, Siop Uwchaled, a convenience store in Cerrig-y-Drudion (four miles). A little further in the other direction is Clawddnewydd Community Shop (five miles from site). The latter is adjacent to the community-owned Glan Llyn pub (four miles) which serves food (Thursday-Sunday) and does takeaways too. There’s a closer pub to site, The Crown Inn, just over a mile down the road which has a classic pub menu and a riverside garden. The market town of Ruthin is 10 miles from site and has a supermarket as well as independent shops and a choice of cafes, pubs and eateries.
