    About this space The "Kick Back Tiny Shack" has a queen size bed, small futon bed (for a child) along with two single camp cots. This tiny house can sleep up to four people (2-3 most comfortably) depending on your needs. There is a mini fridge with mini freezer along with a mini gas range/oven, microwave, coffee pot and toaster. There is a TV with only local channels available. Wi-Fi is available at nearby restaurants. AT&T works well here, all others are very sketchy. The cabin has a freestanding gas fireplace to keep you cozy and warm. Come prepared to relax. This is a rustic cabin with all amenities so no need to pack up dishes, bedding, towels, etc. (bring sleeping bag and pillow for anything other than the queen size bed.) The kitchen is fully stocked with your basic cooking and dining essentials. If you don't want to do dishes you are welcome to bring your own paper plates, etc. Coffee, Salt, pepper, dish soap and hand soap, toilet paper and one roll of paper towels provided. There is no running water, but you will be supplied with pump faucet with 10 gallons of water for the kitchen sink for doing dishes, etc. There is also a pump faucet for the outhouse sink. You can heat water on the stove with the camp coffee pot supplied. In addition, 1 gallon of drinking water will be supplied also. There is a heated outhouse next to the cabin which has a shower stall in which you can shower with an electric pump shower and on demand water heater. There is a new 1000 gallon tank under outhouse. Towels will be available and if you need more water, you can contact us, and we can refill at our home which is located next door. Please allow notice in case we are not home at the time. The contact information will be provided with your booking confirmation. You have your own private yard on our 6 acres with a screen tent & BBQ pit in the summer months, firepit and grill off of the back deck year-round. If you chose to bring a four-wheeler, canoe, boat or snowmobile there is plenty of parking space depending on the quantity. Come and unwind or explore the many wonders that the Northwoods has to offer! AT&T works well but all other cell services are sketchy. The interior of the cabin is newly refinished. The exterior will be improved as time goes by.

    This property is adjacent to a wilderness area (Pikes Creek) and had been our organic farm for decades. It is pristine, wild and beautiful. We currently have 3 camping sites: a lodge tent for up to 4, a 2-person A-frame tent with cots, and a dry cabin. Both the lodge tent and A-frame tent share a privacy shelter with toilet and shower. They are approximately 50 feet away from each other. You would drive to both sites and park in a designated parking within a short walk from them. The dry cabin is more isolated from the other two and has its own shower and compostable toilet. All three sites are completely off grid. The Chanterelle Woods Preserve has a mix of trees, flora, fauna and wild mushrooms, hence the name "Chanterelle Woods." We ran an organic farm here for decades. When we were farming, we had "woofers" (an international organization of volunteers) who stayed in tents and a camper while here. It was a life changing experience for them....Now we would like to offer this opportunity to "rustic campers." Whether you want to stay exclusively on the land and relax or explore the surrounding area, there is a little something for everyone. We are 3 miles from the city of Bayfield, Wisconsin, which is the gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. We are close to all diverse recreational pursuits: biking, hiking, kayaking and golfing. In case you forgot any outdoor or camping gear, there is Howl Adventure Center, one mile from us, that also has a cidery and a small bar with a food/taco truck and outdoor seating. The Big Top Chautauqua on Mt. Ashwabay hosts all kinds of music, art, and cultural events all summer long. Our property is directly across from Mt. Ashwabay, separated by the Pikes Creek wilderness area offering beautiful mountain biking and fat biking trails. Closer to town, there are quaint local shops and art galleries where you can peruse beautiful pottery, fine jewelry and original paintings made by local artists. Stop by one of the many fine restaurants in town for a taste the best fish dishes freshly caught from the Lake.

We know that not everyone digs an outhouse. Is the bed upstairs? — Yes. The bed is located in the high loft which can only be accessed by a steep ladder. Guests use at their own risk. Is there Wifi or cell network service? — There is some cell signal. Verizon tends to have much better reception than At&t or T-Mobile. There is no wifi… some say for an even better connection :) What is a “dry” cabin? — This means you will be completely off-grid: solar-powered lighting & charging, plumbing free, outhouse, etc. What about water? — We provide drinking water in larger jugs May-October. Guests will need to bring any drinking or wash water November - April. We have rain barrels in summer months for collecting wash water. In winter snow can be melted for wash water. What is your bathroom situation? — We have an A-frame outhouse just next to the cabin. For showering, guests can consider visiting the Grand Marais Rec park for a $4 shower, Sauna at Sisu & Loli in town, or buy a $10 day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool. Do you have a coffee maker? — We have a pour over and filters for your use. Do you have a grill or fire pit? — Yes, May through Oct. We have a propane BBQ. We supply the propane and utensils. There is a fire pit. Wood bundles can be bought in town. Guests are free to use fire pit year round but are responsible for snow removal to use it if they wish to do so. How remote is the cabin? — The cabin is easily accessed (approx. 300 ft) just off Hwy 61 on a maintained driveway. Your views are woods, nature & Lake Superior. While this cabin is completely private, there are neighbors several hundred feet through the woods. However, just as most cabins close to Lake Superior, you could have some road noise. Winter Conditions: We recommend AWD/4WD vehicle from Nov 1 to April 30. 2 wheel drive vehicles are free to use the parking at the bottom of the driveway (300ft from cabin). Due to plowing shortages we cannot guarantee that the road will be plowed on a daily basis. We have 2 parking spots available at the bottom of the driveway in the case that guests are uncomfortable with driving the steep hill or that the conditions are unfavorable to do so. It is approximately a 300ft walk up to the cabin from the bottom of the driveway. Pets: 
We do not make exceptions to our Airbnb no-pet policy other than service animals. Any pet hair will result in a minimum $250 fine regardless of any circumstances and any additional billing that the cleaners require for excess cleaning due to pet residue.

    Our family has lived here on this property since Great Grandma Alma bought it in 1928. I am the fourth, raising the fifth generation of Carlson's living here. The log cabin was built by my grandfather, Oliver, in the 1950's and he lived there full time after he retired. The cabin is set apart from the two other homes on the property which is where our family lives full time. Birch Lake is over 6500 acres and stretches for 16 miles from our home to where HWY 1 passes over it. Most of the shoreline is federal and state land giving the lake a wild/undeveloped feel compared to more developed lakes in the area. It's known for producing walleye, northern pike, and crappie as well as other species of fish. SUMMER OF 2024 Update: The cabin will be under construction/improvement for this season. What this means is that only the main room will be available. We will be dismantling the back bedroom and old kitchen. This will impact your stay in terms of visible structural work to the cabin taking place but will not affect the main room or it's amenities. I will not be working on the cabin during any guest stays and will make sure the site is safe and clean for your stay with minimal indication work is going on. I'll make sure the main room of the cabin is clean and ready for your stay but the back bedroom will no longer be useable. The main room will still be bug free, dry, and have electricity. The grey couch is suitable for 1-2 people to sleep on, the beige couch pulls out a full/queen, and there is a cot for another. You may bring your own cot/sleeping pad or pitch a tent in the spacious and grassy lawn. Also note there is a new outhouse (the green one in pics). The old one is still pictured (hipcamp doesn't have a delete option) but not in use. Trust me, the new one is better. There is a small (12 foot) aluminum row boat and a pedalboat available for guests to use. What we provide: One room log cabin with guest only private beach. Electricity, outhouse, small kitchenette with limited utensils, fridge, small gas grille, microwave, toaster oven, hotplate, electric tea kettle, clean fitted sheets, and cot. What you'll need to bring: Sleeping bags/blankets, potable water or water treatment system, green propane cannister if you'd like to use the grille, charcoal if you'd like to use the larger grille, tp, etc. Please ask for more specifics. Can usually and am happy to accommodate.

    Boundary Country Trekking

    For centuries the people of the Mongolian plateau have found yurts to be comfortable, convivial dwellings. These round, peaked-roofed, canvas-covered huts are warm and cozy. Over the past twenty years hundreds of skiers traveling the Banadad Ski Trail have found our yurts to be comfortable winter lodging. Now you can enjoy the comfort of a wilderness yurt all year round at the new Tall Pines Yurt. Do not forget to bring your sense of adventure. Inside the yurt Members of the Minnehaha Academy Ski Team The Tall Pines Yurt is located on the edge of the Boundary Waters near a stand of old growth white pines and on Hooker Lake, named by some comic loggers. Half of the lake is in the Boundary Waters. The Tall Pines, twenty-foot housekeeping yurt, is attractively furnished and is set-up to accommodate up to four people, sleeping on a futon and bunk beds. Additional cots or bunk beds can be brought in for larger groups. The yurt is heated by a wood stove / fireplace, has overhead gas lighting and a camp kitchen with pots, pans, dishes, utensils, cook stove, dining table and chairs. Ask us about making camp coffee. Outside is an attached deck. A firepit, charcoal grill and most importantly, a Finnish sauna are nearby. Outhouse is located near the yurt also. Hooker Lake is a natural environmental lake, requiring a significant setback for any structure. Over the years forest growth has occured around the shore, which has limited the visibility of the lake from the yurt. This lake is slowly turning into a bog and in the summer, it's surrounded by lots of bog flowers. It is a pretty lake, but not suitable for fishing or swimming. Yurters can drive over to the Bed & Breakfast and fish and swim in Little Ollie Lake or portage into a nearby lake. During the non-snow months you hike in three hundred feet from the summer parking area. The trail to the yurt connects to some of the finest mountain biking trails in the area. Hiking trails are just out the door and a canoe is provided for your use. During the winter the yurt is an exclusive silent sports accommodation, accessible by a 1-kilometer ski or snowshoe trek on a groomed trail from the Lace Ski Lake Trail or winter parking area. The eastern trailhead of the Banadad is 2 kilometers away by skis. For the adventuresome skier, Boundary Country Trekking offers Yurt to Yurt Skiing between the Tall Pines and Croft Yurts along the Boundary Waters longest tracked trail: the Banadad. In the winter, we bring in your luggage and food containers. In the summer, you can drive to a parking area near the yurt if you drive a high clearance vehicle. We supply and bring in your water.You bring in your drinking water containers. Year around, we recommend a picnic cooler to hold your food and ice. Ice is available at a local grocery, a three mile drive. During the winter, the Tall PInes yurt is not available on weekends or holidays, until one week before a weekend or holiday. The Tall PInes yurt is available for yurt to yurt resevations only for weekends and holidays. Pets welcome at the Tall Pines Yurt for a nominal fee. All our accommodations, including the Tall Pines Yurt, are smoke free. Because the yurts are located deep in the woods you might be visited by mice. We keep traps in the yurts and we run the mice trap line often.

I work as a hospice nurse and help out on the farm when I am able and we have 2 boys, Arlo and Owen. We keep busy! We offer 3 rustic rentals onsite, but each is very private and secluded. For guests interested in hiking we recommend: 1) The 310 mile Superior Hiking Trail easily accessible at multiple locations throughout Grand Marais OR 2) The Woods Creek Superior Hiking trailhead approximately 1 mile from property; parking lot at trailhead. Biking not possible on site but nearby gravel roads are an option for advanced riders or bikers looking for a challenging ride.     Looking for a private retreat to get away from it all? This 38 acre property is just the spot! The pine lined driveway guides your way to the homestead or your campsite. Step inside the homestead and you will find turn of the century, farmhouse charm with a large farmhouse table to gather in kitchen, stove, island, hardwood floors and original to the homestead windows. Cozy up by the wood burning fireplace in the living room with salvaged barn wood walls and beamed ceiling details. If camping is more your style you will find an easy to back into site located just at the end of our beautiful driveway. The campsites are gravel and are well marked for easy set up. All campers and guests at the homestead will have access to the outhouse on the property. We take pride in keeping our outhouse very clean. Across the dirt road you will find the Historic Toimi School and Rest Area. At Toimi School you will have access to potable water and pit toilets. We do not have running water at the homestead, so the closest potable water source is Toimi School. Wild raspberries line the homestead and the road, bring your bucket to fill as you walk over to fill your jug of water. We have a stream that runs thru our 38-acre property, if you care to hike along any of the trails that have been cut you may find it! We have Adirondack chairs for lounging and an outdoor play kitchen with toys for the kids. The fire pit on the homestead is shared among the campers and the homestead guests. Feel free to start a fire in the pit and pull up a chair. Enjoy the company of your fellow camper! The homestead is located in the perfect spot for the North Shore explorer! 1 hour 18 minutes to Ely, 30 minutes to Two Harbors and Silver Bay, 1 hour 50 minutes to Grand Marais. Countless other stops along the way including Black Beach, Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse and Iona's (Pink) Beach.

    Experience upscale camping–Glamping in the Forested Hills of Lake Superior. Sailor Springs is a small three-site campground located just two miles outside of the picturesque tourist town of Bayfield, WI. 2023 will be our first year of operation and we’re excited to host campers on the property and provide a unique camping experience. The campground is spread out over 5 acres of forest that you’ll hike into from Bresette Hill Road. After parking at the trailhead, you’ll gather your bags and hike into your glamping site. The trail winds through the woods, leading you first to a valley where the seasonal Clark Creek runs through in the spring. The first two campsites are on the other side of this valley. The trail can be steep in spots and requires a moderate level of fitness and mobility to reach the secluded campsites. The third site is a bit farther into the forest, the little A-frame cabin, Anchor sits on the edge of the spring-fed Brickyard Creek that flows year-round. We have many plans for the property and depending on when you stay, the campground will be in various stages of development. The campsites, trailhead / parking area, and trails are scheduled to be completed in early spring. We hope to add amenities such as a camp sauna and screened-in gazebo later in the 2024 summer / fall.     Please Note: This is an Adults Only Hipcamp Location. Enjoy your stay at Sunset Bay Getaway in your own self contained RV or camper and enjoy the views of our beautiful lake. Relax in the evening around the firepit. We do offer firewood for sale. Just enjoy being in nature, listening to the sounds of the frogs and birds. Grab a bite to eat at a local bar/restaurant 1 mile away. ATV trails, fishing, hunting and nature walks all available close by. Dogs allowed but must be leashed and cleaned up after. Adults only. We do not have hookups for water, sewer or electric. We do not have restrooms or any facilities for hipcampers to use. All Hipcampers must have self contained RV's/Campers. The driveway to the camping/parking spots is a tad of a slope so keep that in mind when booking. The max length we allow is 34 Feet long due to the road to the camping spots. You might drag your bumper or hitch on your way down the hill to the spot. It's not hard to drive, it just is a bit steep and only gravel. We are always here to help if need be when you arrive. Bring bug dope, the bugs can be very hungry right about dusk time til about 30 min after the sun goes down. If you have kayaks or paddleboards you are welcome to bring them and enjoy the lake. Watercraft (boats/jet ski's) not allowed. This is a primitive camping spot, meaning no hook ups or WiFi. (no water/sewer/electric/wifi)

    The rugged wilderness trails and primitive hike-in sites at George H. Crosby Manitou State Park aren’t for the faint of heart, but if ultimate seclusion and killer views pump you up, this place couldn’t be more worth it. Waterfalls pour into volcanic canyons and rare mammals roam free here on the north shore of Lake Superior (moose, deer, bears, and wolves, to name a few).

    Bensen Lake and the Manitou River emerge gloriously through dense swaths of spruce & fir, all largely undisturbed per the wishes of the park’s namesake—George H. Crosby was a mining magnate who donated the land on the condition that it wouldn’t be developed on too much. It was Minnesota’s first backpacking-only site, and has been intentionally maintained as a haven for backpackers all these years. Pack up and git over there!

    When to go

    The best time to visit George H. Crosby Manitou State Park is during the summer and fall when the weather is ideal for hiking and nature viewing. Winter brings a serene beauty, perfect for snowshoeing, though travel may be more challenging. Spring's thaw can make trails muddy and less accessible.
