Description

Bastrop Campground has 4 great areas to choose from. Adjacent to the RV-only Piney Hill Campground, Deer Run’s 16 sites provide asylum for campers of the tent-only variety. Picnic tables, tent-pads, fire rings, grills, water and restrooms are provided at this spot. Clean and well-maintained, the biggest downside of the Copperas Creek area is that it’s located right next to the highway. If you don’t mind dreams that might involve driving motorcycles - which actually does sound pretty cool 8- then this could be just the spot for you. Harleys aside, this 29-site campground has restrooms and showers, a group picnicking site, and many areas that are fully-hooked up with water and electricity. The Creekside area has seven walk-in sites are sandwiched between Copperas and Piney Hill and come with grills, fire pits, picnic table, tent-pads and water. The site is accessible via the Red Trail and is also just a short jaunt from the Yellow Trail. The creek itself traces a contour around the grounds, the soothing streams partially obscuring the sounds of vehicles that drift over from the highway.

I love this park! Sadly, a couple of years ago fires destroyed a lot of the beautiful trees in the surrounding area, but that didn’t diminish the lovely sights on the trails. The bathrooms were renovated last summer and are now super glamorous! 👌🏼 Tile, A/C, flushing toilets....it’s a welcomed reprieve from the oppressive summer heat and humidity!

The description should be updated to include the fact that the Memorial Day 2015 flood broke the dam and the lake is no more. It's a pretty depressing sight. I loved camping in Bastrop as a kid. It's such a different experience now with nearly no forest and no lake.

Deer Run is the best campground in my opinion. Sites 27-30 have no trees at all and a lovely view of RVs, but 27 and 28 are handicap accessible and RIGHT next to the playground (and bathrooms). If you are camping with young children who need supervision, these are great spots since you can sit at camp while they play. Otherwise, aim for sites 32-34 or 37-42 for trees and a more natural view. But you can hear the highway everywhere.

Smaller park but great campgrounds. The sites are a little close to one another without much privacy in between. If you are looking for a more private setting check out Bastrop's neighbor, Buescher State Park.
