We chose this location due to its proximity to McDonald Observatory where we made reservations to attend a twilight program ($5 per person) and a star party ($12 per person). These were amazing! Check them out! Also, we saw javelinas at the campground.
Beautiful spot, and close enough to Fort Davis to easily get basic groceries in small stores. But you will have a better selection in Alpine, about 25-30 minutes south.
The Indian Lodge is closed for renovations. The hiking is top-notch. The Sheep Pen Canyon Loop Trail requires a sign-in at the park office. The campsites are nestled in the valley. One of our favorite parks in Texas.
For Texans, it's way out West.
Davis Mountains SP is a small but beautiful park & should be included in any tour of far west Texas. The developed camp sites have clean showers/restrooms & are situated between the hills. You will not have complete privacy as with the primitive sites, but it only fills up at busy times like holidays and Spring Break. There are several short but lovely trails, & be sure to visit nearby McDonald Observatory for a Star Party as well as Fort Davis Nat. Historic Site. Check out Indian Lodge but skip the sub par food.
