Sleep beneath the stars and to the soothing sounds of bats hunting insects via echolocation.

Seriously, though, camping at Kickapoo Cavern is a great way to experience a wide array of wildlife and incredibly clear and starry night skies. There are only 20 campsites here, but the park isn’t usually crowded so these usually meet the park’s needs. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring or grill, and then you can choose one with either water only or water, electric, and sewer (for RV’s). Each site holds up to six people, but there are five ‘group camp’ sites that you can basically combine together to meet your needs.

Your guide to camping in Kickapoo Cavern Campground

Overview

Biking

The designated biking trails at Kickapoo Cavern State Park are the perfect weekend adventure spot west of San Antonio. Weaving through forested and rocky elevations, you’ll feel like you’re in the middle of the Texas hill country. Stay out ‘til dusk and you might even see a bat or two flying overhead!

Hiking

Become a cave explorer at Kickapoo Cavern State Park when you spend the weekend hiking through dense trees and rocky caves. While there are eighteen miles of hiking trails to explore on your own, you’ll need to reserve a spot on the Saturday tour of the undeveloped Kickapoo Cave site. The hike is ranked strenuous, so pack those hiking boots along for the trip.

Wildlife watching

Considering Kickapoo Cavern State Park is a series of caves, the most popular wildlife watching opportunity happens at dusk. The spectacular bat flights happen each evening, so be sure to finish up your birding hike early. During the day, search for the uncommon Montezuma quail and gray vireo that make their home within the park.
