Stay in a large, 16' canvas bell tent with an organic matress on a wooden bed frame appointed with solar twinkle lights, wool rugs, leather lounge chairs and option of adding a second bed or two. Our Tent sits above the ground on a wood platform, and looks over a private area complete with a fire ring and picnic table, just steps from a spring bursting from a hillside next to the creek, which you have access to dip your toes in or look for frogs. Leave your car in sight and walk your items down a mowed path with the assistance of a hand-cart. Watch the stars at night, listen to the frogs sing, the coyotes howl and the whip-or-will sing. We are a homestead farm, with a small flock of chickens and ducks. We live on the property with our 4 kids and two dogs. Nested along the Pecatonica River, Pink River Ranch boasts some lovely pink sunsets, quiet nights, chorus frogs chirping and some of the creature comforts you expect. Our ranch is home to sheep, cattle, horses, chickens, ducks, cats and dogs. We're animal lovers and we hope you are too! We have a shared restroom for our guests. This space is jointly used between the guests who stay in our vintage airstream, camping wagon as well as our two tent sites. It features a shower, tub and relief facilities. We also have an outdoor shower if you're feeling adventurous! Potable water is available on-site but must be hauled into your campsite. Campsites are furnished with a small camp grill, fire ring and picnic table. All tent sites are accessible by foot only. We have a parking lot for you to keep your vehicle and wagons for use to get items to your site. Each site is no further than a one minute walk, two minutes if you're hauling a wagon. We sell firewood and charcoal for your grilling adventures (cash or Venmo only). We also sell lamb meat raised on our ranch if you'd like a fully immersive grilling experience. Rich history in this property. The land was purchased from the railroad in 1865 through 1869. Also purchased land from neighboring farms. It was establishes as a farm under the Roberts name in 1872. Our family has seen six generations born and raised on this land in the past 150 years. American Indian tribes use the land for their burial ground ceremonies. Elders from a Wisconsin tribe came to the farm through the 1960s to trek the land and perform a ceremony to honor their ancestors. Many arrow heads were found in the fields of the land. The American Indians told stories of how the little spring fed creek running through our land was a small river flowing towards the Apple River which flows into the Mississippi River. The Apple river runs northwest of the farm. In 2001, the land hosted a small budget film crew for the scenes and setting of the 2002 film “Stray dogs” with Genevieve Turner. The property is a second farm that has been in my family's history since the 1960's. We are a working crop, horses and beef cattle farm. We raise crops on this property. We have a main farm down the road that if you would like to visit, we can try setting that up so you can see the animals. Please not that the cabin has a porta potty outside. The cabin does not have electricity, but an extension cord can be brought and plugged into the outdoor electric outlet. The cord can be run into the cabin to use the fan, lamp and electric skillet or infrared heater in the colder months. We have direct access to the property for ATV/UTV's for the public road use on the back roads. You can travel from town to town and sight see. The Cook Heritage Farm Estate, 1848 is located on 200 acres of prairie and timber in the Driftless Region of Northeast Iowa. The land has been in the family for 173 years, passed on from generation to generation. The estate property borders the Turkey River and is nestled between rolling farmland and gentle bluffs leading to the mighty Mississippi. The Driftless Area of the upper American Midwest was never glaciated and is characterized by caves and cave systems, disappearing streams, blind valleys, underground streams, sinkholes, springs, and cold streams. The Beginning In 1848, Henry and Mary Cook traveled from Bavaria to America for a better life. Their journey on American soil began in New Orleans where they traveled up the Mississippi River to McGregor, Iowa. They bought their initial 40 acres through the land grant office in McGregor, hooked up a team of oxen and traveled 30 miles overland to settle in Clayton County. To stake a claim of ownership for this land they built a sod hut and lived there for two years to satisfy the land requirements. Although their beginning was meager, their courage was abundant enduring hardships for the potential the land promised. Their pioneer spirits demonstrated a deep commitment for stewardship for the land that eventually produced a rich legacy handed down for generations. Harsh winters and physical labor were offset by the beauty of the area. Henry and Mary and their descendants eventually found a harmony with one another. The Turkey River provided sustenance and its raging springtime surge demonstrated the tenuous balance between man and nature. A give and take that remains to this day. There are several options for accommodations on the acreage: each site will be added. The estate is also open to be full booked by one party - which can accommodate up to 40 over night guests including campers, RV's, house and guest lodge sites. The Country Home: This six-bedroom, two story home was built in 1917. Ninety percent of the design, woodwork, and stained glass are original. The home was plumbed and wired for electricity during the original build. A home generator was placed in the basement to supply battery energy. Radiators were the primary source of heat for every room. The lower level is still heated by radiant heat, and supplemented during fall and winter nights with a kitchen gas fireplace. This is not listed on Hipcamp. The Country Crib Guest Lodge was once the main “corn crib” on the property, used for years to dry and store corn harvested from the farms’ fields. The Crib was renovated into a full kitchen, 2 bathrooms, a living room, and a sleeping loft. The sleeping loft has 4 queen beds. Enjoy your favorite morning beverage on the east patio deck and watch the sun rise over the prairie flower fields. Star gazing off the second-floor deck is a must. The Crib IS LISTED on Hipcamp. (see pictures of the property and the red Country Crib Guest Lodge.) The Bin Bar adjacent to the Crib was also used for corn storage but abandoned years ago. In 2017, the bin was moved to the east side of the Crib and over the past few years has been fashioned into a gathering spot for late night storytelling and night caps. The Gazebo Fire Pit is built upon the site of the original log house ~ circa 1850. The log house had a water cistern, a conical shaped underground vessel, used to catch fresh rainwater. The water was pumped into the log house using a pitcher pump. The cistern remains and is located underneath the landscape on the west of the Gazebo. The Barn was the first structure built on the property. So, the story goes, “first take care of the livestock and horses to assure human survival”. The Barn is need of restoration. For your safety, the barn is off limits. Acreage Campsites: 6 RV campsites are available: 3 with sewer and electrical hook-ups and 3 electrical only. Surrounding area: Iowa cities including Decorah, Clermont, Elgin, Elkader, and Prairie Du Chen, Wisconsin are within driving distance. Each city boasts its own fun for day and night entertainment including local artisan wares, antiquing, hiking, biking, golfing, water recreation, breweries, and dining pleasures. The Cook Heritage Farm Estate sits between Elgin and Elkader and you can easily follow the ‘river road’ to get between the two destinations.

Staying on Jessica’s land was one of the single best getaways either I or my partner have had in recent memory! We initially took a trip away from home to alleviate burn out early in the working year and returned home even more refreshed than anticipated. The Bunkie was perfectly cozy for me, my partner, and our pup. The view was rejuvenating, and we had access to whatever we needed to keep comfortable. We did a lot of reading and board games when inside, and did our cooking on one of the many fire pits outdoors. Jessica has a wealth of knowledge and earnest love for the land she stewards, and we had a great time learning about the local flora and fauna. She kindly walked us through foraging, apothecary processes, artisanal soap-making, and her husband taught us how to keep our knives razor sharp. Beyond the knowledge we were gifted, we made sure to also leave with a lot of amazing smelling soap and bath salts. Outside of the space, there’s a lot of beautiful and reasonably accessible hiking in the vicinity. If you’re not one for cooking each night, there’s also a number of good spots in town to get some coffee/tea, food, and beer. We’re excited to tell everyone back home about the beautiful time we had, and we’re hoping to come back soon to see how the space is during other seasons. Thank you so much, Jessica!

Me and my pup had a wonderful time in the bunkie! Jessica is a fantastic host and truly went above and beyond to make sure that me and my dog were comfortable. She had great recommendations for stuff to do around the area and taught me how to make soap! Her soaps are truly next level and it was so cool to see all of her wonderful art! Staying at Jessica’s Bunkie was a wonderful experience. The design of the room was so cute and cohesive. Truly felt like a little cabin even though it was functionally a sunroom off the side of the house. The bed was great and views even more beautiful. What was even better though was getting to explore the property. There’s some trails out back that allowed us to climb up the mountain and the hobbit house was so cute. It felt like we could be at home there. When swinging on the swing Jessica invited us inside to meet her pet skunk! She showed us the room where she creates and stores her art (soaps and terrarium like frames). We got to see the birds out her window, so many! And talking with her sun was quite fun, learning about bees. She was so hospital and really made the experience magical. The only thing that could have been better was that the room was quite cold despite the little heater and we didn’t have water till we asked in the morning. But I think some of that had to do with how we didn’t let her know our ETA and arrived quite late! The bathroom was also a decent walk from the room. Maybe 100ft? But felt long cause of the cold. That’s typical hip camp though, right? Overall, would 100% recommend and go back as well!

This was a lovely stop-over on our way to family Christmas - even with snow and slush on the ground, she met us in the dark after we arrived with smiles and warm greetings!! Free firewood for our campfire (which is right outside the window of Bunkie) was a bonus. Even though it was a chilly night and we didn't stay outside too long, we could easily see it from the window when we were inside. A wall of windows was perfect to make the smaller space seem even larger. And if it had been summer, I'm sure the flowers and wildlife would have been a lovely sight!! Even in winter, we could see Christmas lights outside the town. Jessica had tea waiting for me (I ordered it), allowed our pets to stay with us (wonderful to be able to sleep in comfort with our dogs), had a coffeemaker, supplies to shower (if it had been warm enough to do so), extra blankets and a space heater to warm our little private space. Yes - you must go up and down stone steps to access the parking area and the bathroom, but all you need is shoes and it's totally possible. While this would not be a location for accessibility (for those that need that), if you are able, it's a great little experience. The town is absolutely gorgeous on the Mississippi River with little shops, and a few restaurants. I'd highly recommend if you want a creative little place to stay, don't mind a gorgeous view, want free firewood with your campfire ring and want to meet a real life pet skunk - yes - that's right :)

We loved camping at the Woodsy tent site! It’s was cozy. Sarah was very welcoming and a great host! Always quick to respond to anything we needed. Downtown Bellevue was cute and had a great book shop. 30 mins to Downtown Dubuque and 50 mins to Galena. The drive was very scenic!

We bought the farmette with much work outside and home interior remodel to complete. We slowly turned the property into our family oasis. We neighbor a pasture with cows. There are free range chickens running around during the day. Geese greet us every evening and morning at the pond...as do the many bullfrogs. Occasionally you'll hear the coyotes, but they keep their distance. The stars shine peacefully and the sunsets are picturesque (most afternoons). The pond is a great place to swim and fish. The hillside is a nice walk for exercise or take the easier route and sit under the great oak tree in the other pasture. Campsites are off the road, behind our main home. You won't find a sign...we keep it simple. We allow pets at the sites for a $5 per pet/per night. If you would like to bring a pet, please add the Pet Fee which is listed on the Extra during the booking process. We have firewood available for sale, $5.55/bundle. This is located in the Extra section during the booking process. Lastly, there is free range chicken eggs available for purchase, $3.50/dozen. This is also located in the Extra section during the booking process.
