The owner is very responsive and helpful. The site itself is soooo quiet and peaceful it’s how camping should be. No noise pollution whatsoever and you may even see a deer or turkey. Very secluded the entrance is at the two tall poles on the road and then your basically there.

Great place. Heavier than you may think to lug everything in so be prepared. Be careful about signage. We walked half a mile up hill in freezing rain for the Joe and Doe cabin but it was the wrong way.

Weekend Trip to Hidden Valley Nature Center

Two Dog was snug for our one cold windy night stay. We wondered what supplies would be there so in case it's helpful for others, noting that some things were clearly just leftovers, so depends on who precedes you: plenty of dry wood for the stove inside (reload the supply from the nearby woodshed before you leave), an old-school can-opener, a roll of TP, foam mats for the sleeping loft, a broom, a box of matches, a few sheets of newspaper, a fire extinguisher, a water kettle, a few DIY pegs and nails for hanging gear/lights, many decks of cards, a cribbage board, guestbook, a low table, two chairs, and a bench on the front porch. Outside is a fire pit, picnic table, and pit toilet. The stove was easy enough to use and did a good job of warming the space, but there's plenty of opportunity for cold air to come through the cabin. We brought water from home and glad we did - looked like the year-round hand pump at the Barn was out of order when we passed. Recommend bringing fire starting supplies, either your own tinder or a small axe bc wood provided is just big logs. If you're there during warmer weather, there are good trees for hammocks.

Mathew is a great host and steward of the land. I had a great stay and the yurt and property were just as described. Mind you, you are completely off the grid so treat it like tent camping and come in prepared. Leave it better than you found it.

This place is precious, love the space! Woodstove and 0 degree sleeping bag kept me super cozy. Lots of Barred owls in the woods at night. As campers here, we need to be mindful and not leave debris like orange peels and food scraps; please respect this land that HVNC is sharing with us and leave no trace ❤

The Pond Cabin is a sweet spot in a beautiful, mixed hardwood forest on the edge of Little Dyer Pond. The wood stove kept us warm and cozy. The Barred Owls hooting at night was a special treat.

We had an absolutely amazing experience at John’s property, even in the freezing winter! The land itself was gorgeous, offering a peaceful and scenic escape despite the cold. What truly stood out was John’s incredible attentiveness—he went above and beyond to ensure our group was comfortable and well taken care of. Before our arrival, he plowed the snow for us and even personally escorted us to the campsite, which we really appreciated given the extreme temperatures. The porta potty was clean and well-maintained, making our stay even more convenient. While water wasn’t available due to the freezing conditions (understandably so), everything else was well-prepared, and we had a fantastic time. We’d love to revisit when the weather is warmer and fully enjoy everything this beautiful property has to offer. Highly recommend this campsite and John as a host!

I booked this hipcamp SUPER last minute, due to some rearrangements that couldn't be worked through with our first planned hipcamp. John was so accommodating and prompt with checking that the heat in the tiny house was working before he approved the booking in case it wasn't and we couldn't stay. well it was working, and we found the little gas powered fireplace to be so soothing and cozy. I have to give John kudos as well for taking his snowmobile and making us a path to sled with as well as bringing us sleds to borrow! my partner and i are full grown adults and we had the best time sledding down that hill. it was hard to walk back up (we are aging) but it was so worth it. we will definitely be returning!

We loved our stay at the Tiny House! The cabin itself is beautiful and very private, the listing was accurate, and the HipCamper Guide left for us gave us lots of things to do in the area. Tucker is responsive and super helpful! We came in the dead of winter, so the electricity wasn’t working, but lots of lanterns were provided. And after the woodstove heated up properly, the place was warm and comfortable despite the freezing temps! We had brought a portable heater just incase but only used it when waiting for the woodstove to heat the place up. The outhouse is clean and stocked with TP and hand sanitizer. Lots of firewood was provided. Overall a really wonderful stay and we cannot wait to come back in the summer!

The land is beautiful and has so much to offer in any season. The space is clean and well cared-for. The loft is spacious and firewood provided. We packed in our own water but one could easily filter/ treat if the water isn't frozen! We didn't see a single soul the whole time, and enjoyed equally our relaxing by the fire and our walkabouts.

The cabin was great! Big enough for more than just two people. I have been coming here for years. The cots in this cabin are a nice touch, just wish we could move them around. A few things to note though, the wood stove in the Joe & Doe cabin takes HOURS to heat up, and you need to constantly feed it. Not like the other wood stoves in the other cabins up there. Also, the people before us didn’t bring any wood inside to dry out before we got there and there were no wood chips in the outhouse. The cabins are great, but the price has gone up a lot, and it doesn’t look like they are being checked in on as much as they used to be.

Our cute little A-frame sleeps 2 people comfortably. It comes with its own outdoor kitchen, grill and outdoor bathroom, with a hot shower and composting toilet. The lake does not have a sandy bottom, so you might want to bring water shoes. We are located about halfway between Bangor and Ellsworth. The Mini is a perfect spot for day trips to the coast. Just a 15 minute ride to Bangor where you will find many local breweries, restaurants, concert venue, theaters, shopping and night life. We are only an hour away from beautiful Mount Desert Island. Our area has abundant small wildlife. We regularly see rabbits, geese, ducks, beaver, eagles, osprey and of course loons. Kayak over to our private island where there are blueberries, and a mating pair of eagles. Paddle over, have lunch, pick some blueberries for your morning cereal, go for a swim. You could also kayak through the thoroughfare to Holbrook Pond. The site is small, just 1 acre and we do live very close by. You will have privacy, but you may hear or see us or our dogs at points during your stay. We will provide a few jugs of water, but you may want to bring some of your own. Cookware, plates, cups, utensils, and cooler are available for use. There is also a gas grill available.

Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary

The Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary was generously bequeathed to the Kennebec Land Trust in November 2016 upon owner Kendra Wakefield Shaw’s passing. Its 108-acres feature historic cabins and 4000 feet of frontage on Cobbossee Stream in West Gardiner. The property’s coniferous and deciduous woods, vernal pools, and marshlands are important habitat for many species of birds, mammals, and plants. In 2018, the Maine Cabin Masters renovated two of the stream-side cabins, which now serve as rustic getaways for Hipcampers and the like. A small dock and canoes are available for use on the wide and deep flatwater stream! *NEW 2024 - A dock has been added to cabin 2, so each cabin now has it's own private dock. Our cabin is an off grid post and beam structure that we built 8 years ago. It's has a full kitchen, wood stove, and screened porch. There are jugs provided for doing dishes etc and a large (150 gallon) tank outside for refills. There are a generous supply of lanterns (both battery and inflatable solar) flashlights and string lights for lighting. This is a small two story timber frame cabin off grid and secluded deep in the woods. It has a separate outhouse as well as shower stall to use the solar shower bags in. The cabin has a king sized bed in the loft with a child size fold down bunk above it; there is also a pull out couch on the first floor. As well as a kitchen, screened in porch and fire pit. Linen, dishes and utensils are not included please bring all that you need. There is a propane 4 burner stove with oven and solar shower bags. Trash and campfire wood is included. We are very busy with kids and work, we try our best to clean and re-supply between guests but it is not always possible, please let us know if something needs attention!

Four Acre Woods Campground

A beautiful island campground thickly forested with spruce, fir, and birch, Four Acre Woods was created over 60 years ago on Sunshine Island, Maine. Under the name Sunshine Campground, it hosted people from all over the world and delivered the spirit and essence of this ancient, abundant land that so many ancestors had roamed and celebrated before. It was open to the public through to the 90s, but then sat alone for 15 years, waiting for someone to revive it and bring it back to the world. Today, the work of restoration continues with the help of farm partners, family, friends, WWOOFers, and other volunteers. My step Dad Bob ‘discovered’ the island in the 1970’s when he was escaping the rat race and looking to get ‘back to the land’. Over the course of three years he built the island house by floating cedar logs across the bay, using a come-along to bring the up to the land, debarked and prepped them for building and set about constructing his off-grid, solar powered home. All without power tools. Both my Mom and Bob were ardent environmentalists and peace advocates. For 20 years they lived year-round on the island and only left when their ages made it difficult to continue cutting/splitting/moving/burning wood and just the ordeal of living so remotely. Most visitors to the island agree the peaceful vibe continues and that is important to us.

100 Mile Wilderness Cabin

This is a quaint, off grid cabin located in Elliotsville, Me., surrounded by wilderness, next to the Appalachian Trail in the 100 Mile Wilderness. Propane lights, glass front woodstove, fully operational kitchen, propane cookstove, fire pit out front, BBQ grill on porch. Firewood and propane and plenty of water at sink provided. 2 8ft kayaks for your use to explore all the ponds and lakes nearby. You can spend days or weeks exploring the area, hiking, biking, canoeing, mountain climbing and swimming. Its like going back in time a hundred years but you have some cell reception, unlike our ancestors. Have made several improvements to cabin not yet reflected in guest photos. Yeti type cooler provided for refrigeration of food for longer stays. The cabin is small but can accommodate 5 easily. Option to take the canoe across Chicken Mill Pond and walk from there. -14 minute drive to the Schoodic Marine Center, where you can take a ferry to Bar Harbor for the day and catch a ferry back. While on the boat, look for wildlife such as seals, harbor porpoise, bald eagles and other waterfowl. Arriving in Bar Harbor, enjoy shopping, restaurants and other in town activities. -Cycle down the 29 mile Schoodic National Scenic Byway. -17 miles to Schoodic Peninsula and the famous Schoodic Point, where you can catch amazing ocean views. -5 minute drive to Prospect Harbor Lighthouse. Places to eat: The property is located a short drive from scenic Winter Harbor, which has a variety of locally owned restaurants. It's also only about a 25 minute drive to Ellsworth, which also has multiple eating options and grocery stores. Bar Harbor is only about 40 minutes from the property as well, which boasts some amazing eateries, shops, and other activities. NOTE: This site is fully off-grid and requires walking approximately 3-4 minutes on a forest trail from the parking area to get to the site. All equipment must be hand-carried in. There is limited power and potable water. Guests should be prepared for an off-grid yurt experience. Bedding and cookware also are not provided. If you would like a wheel barrow full of firewood provided there is some available on site for a small donation. • There is a hammock with a shade cover at the cabin for you to use. • There is a bug net provided in the cabin if you're in need of some extra protection indoors. • Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is a short drive with a few hiking trails. • Baxter State Park & Acadia National Park are each an hour and a half away (just in opposite directions). • A composting toilet is on site, with a scoop and bucket of sawdust to cover waste. I you need to pee, find a tree! If it's number two, use the loo! • No electricity at the cabin or on the property • No running or potable drinking water. Must bring in water. • The cabin is quite cozy for 1-2 people and/or 1-2 fur babies. The cabin itself has an 8x10’ floor plan with a full size futon. Great synchronicity led us to the wild 30 acres of marsh and woodland that is Turtle Marsh. In addition to making a home here, we dedicating the area as a sanctuary for the quiet enjoyment of nature, eco-spiritual practices and healing. Guests may elect to experience a daily hour-long "Ecospiritual Immersion" walk as part of their stay. These will be led by Ecospiritual Guide and "Wild Mind, Wild Heart" author, Peter Wohl. He has led ecospiritual workshops and retreats for over 20 years. There is a network of trails on our property for enjoying quiet, contemplative walks. In the evenings, weather permitting, there will also be an opportunity for an informal campfire discussion with Peter. There is an additional fee for the walks and campfires. There are several trailheads for the Hills to Sea Trail within a mile of our property. The quintessential New England waterfront town of Belfast on Penobscot Bay, is less than 30 minutes away. One of our favorite spots for quiet hikes along the shore of the bay, is Sears Island. It is one of the largest undeveloped islands on the east coast, that is connected to the mainland by a causeway. The island is 50 minutes away and even on the busiest summer days, its's usually possible to find a quiet spot on the shore to sit and reflect. As we continue to deepen our relationship with this land, we are trying to follow the principles of Deep Ecology in all of our interactions. Our tentsite, while only a 5 minute walk from the road, has been sited to offer as much solitude as possible, with minimal disruption to the surroundings. In spite of being nestled in the woods, no trees were cut to prepare this relatively accessible site. We believe that it still offers a very tangible sense of wildness and solitude. Turn your time away into a transformative and healing experience, as you connect more deeply to the natural world. We hope that you will enjoy the experience of Turtle Marsh as much as we do.
