Weekend Trip to The Needles Outpost Campground

Needles Outpost is literally surrounded by Canyonlands NP and Bears Ears National Monument. This off grid campground, run by the effervescent Amber and ultra handy Caleb, offers numerous sites for all types of campers. We stayed for 3 nights and were impressed by how respectful everyone was. The little store offers a variety of products including ice cream bars, a treat in the desert. Distant views across the desert, expansive stars at night, spectacular sunsets, great location for exploring the Needles section and Bears Ears make this a terrific place to stay.

Weekend Trip to Sandy Beach

My wife and I celebrated our 29th anniversary at a hipcamp near the west shore of Yuba Lake. The RV spots were about 100 yards from the sandy beach, just a 10-minute walk to the shoreline. Though the campsites were quite primitive, they featured level gravel pads and large movable fire pits, allowing us to conveniently adjust the placement of our fire. From our RV pad, we enjoyed a stunning 360-degree view, with breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. The area was private and offered great opportunities for exploration. Our dog loved the off-leash experience and the open range, making it a perfect spot for flying kites or drones around the lake. I would consider camping at this location again.

Such a great stay and highly recommend! As someone who travels solo, it’s so nice to find stays that make me feel safe. Danny is such a kind host and is a big contribution to why I felt so safe. Ringo & the animals were fun to be there and made the stay so unique. Teepees we’re set up great, felt cozy, and the art on them- you’ll have to ask Danny about, it’s beautiful. If youre looking for a stay that will fill your heart, experience nature, and have access to amenities- this is it!!

Weekend Trip to Wildland Gardens

This was our first stop, and we started the trip off right. The hosts were friendly, including their pups and goats, which you could pet. The bathroom facilities were cute, clean, and worked well. Our tent was perfect for two people and had everything we needed. The heater provided was perfect for a cool April night. It was a fun experience. My daughter thought it was like a “safari tent” and way better than staying in a boring hotel.

Is a beautiful camp spot. The campsite is along this pretty red rock and it’s very quieter and peaceful. Definitely recommend

1 night at Wildland Gardens

Loved staying with Carrie Ann and Mike! The tent was spacious and clean and extremely warm. The bed was comfortable. My partner and I arrived late and Carrie Ann accommodated us and made everything was working and we were comfortable. 5 stars all around.

2 nights at Wildland Gardens

Serene and beautiful space, with great platform tents and a comfy bed. Showers got nice and hot, so everything you expect to work, worked. Carrie and Michael were awesome, the drive from SLC was straightforward, and the local Flying U store and kitchen served awesome food (that breakfast Sammie was amazing as was the burger). My six month old pup got to be off leash and she met the sweetest goats in the world. If you want a bit off grid but still accessible to shops and food, this is the place. We’ll definitely be back!

2 nights at The Needles Outpost Campground

Needles Outpost was truly a wonderful spot. Nestled against a redrock formation among the junipers, it has private as well as sites with stunning views available. The store has a chest freezer full of frozen delectables in addition to the regular necessities for camp and pantry. Amber is a delightful host and made us feel welcome. The bathhouse has 2 stalls and 2 showers with 1 sink. It was very functional but in need of some upgrading. We enjoyed the close proximity to the Needles District of Canyonlands. The hiking there is great.

Danny is absolutely a 5-star Host! I enjoyed chatting about our common outdoor interests, and he made my stay as a single traveller feel safe and welcoming. The teepee environment is incredibly memorable and I hope to return one day.

Beautiful setting with a variety of campsites. It was handy having the store upon checkin. The bath house was much appreciated too. One of our favorite camps on our roadtrip! You have to checkin by 5pm but it's for the best so you have time to settle in and enjoy even if just staying one night.

Weekend Trip to Wildland Gardens

It was a peaceful clean and just wonderful place to stay at. The cilo was neat and clean the hot water was plenty. I even had a kitty for a day. It was wonderful hosts are lovely and the atmosphere matched. 10outta10 .

Overview

With a wide variety of terrains ranging from dense forest to arid plateaus, Utah has been attracting campers, backpackers, and hikers for generations. It's home to five national parks, plus dozens of state parks and national forests and monuments (not to mention plenty of BLM land), making it easy to find a Utah camping experience that suits you best. While the southern and eastern parts of the state attract lovers of the great outdoors with their massive rock formations and abundance of recreation activities, you’ll also find plenty to do up in the north, from skiing and snowboarding in the winter to getting out on one of the region’s many lakes and reservoirs come summer.

Where to go

Northwest Utah

Northern Utah is where you'll find some of the state's lushest areas, with plenty of lakes and mountains, a stark contrast to the rockier, arid regions to the south. Salt Lake City is one of the region's biggest draws, and its easy access to outdoor recreation areas, such as Antelope Island State Park on the Great Salt Lake, makes it a reasonable base for those wanting to explore the region. Camping areas abound in this region—the tent-only Cottonwood Campground at Bear Lake State Park is a particularly good choice.

Eastern Utah

Eastern Utah offers some of the best opportunities for outdoor recreation in the state, and that's not just because two of Utah’s five national parks—Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park—are here, a short drive from Moab. Spots worth visiting include Dead Horse Point State Park (popular for mountain biking) and Natural Bridges National Monument, where you’ll see three natural bridge formations carved from the earth millennia ago. This area is also great for archaeology fans. Hovenweep National Monument is a great place to check out the ruins of 13th-century pueblos, while Bear Ears National Monument is full of beautifully preserved ancient cave art.

South-Central and Southern Utah

South Central Utah offers a mix of high desert and dense forest, with plenty of spots to go out and play. You can hike through the slot canyons of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, explore the fairytale-like hoodoos at Goblin Valley State Park, or try your hand at canyoning at Capitol Reef National Park. This region is also home to Lake Powell, on the Colorado River, right on the border with Arizona.

Southwest Utah

Home to both Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, southwest Utah offers fantastic hiking and camping options, with a mix of beautiful rock formations, vast forests, and desert sand dunes. While the national parks are the main draw, this region offers plenty to do, from ATV/OHV riding on the massive golden dunes at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park to checking out the red rock formations at Kodachrome Basin State Park. You'll find some of Utah's best camping spots and hiking trails all through the region, and the lack of light pollution makes this area ideal for stargazing under the night skies.
