Weekend Trip to Willows Farm

We came back to Willow's Farm and tried out the Woods camping. We loved it! It was private, shaded, quiet, and had plenty of space for our set up. Honestly, the only issue we had was that previous campers definitely ate crabs there because they threw all the claws around the campsite and our dog happened to find them all and eat them. We will definitely be coming back!

This tidy site was by a lovely stream, with a well-maintained firepit and a clean portapotty a little ways away. This is the first time I've ever had an actual basin with tap water by my tent! The closest thing to "glamping" our family has ever done, as a result. Our 8 year old was delighted with everything--the stream (which supplied the best noise for sleeping), the large site where we could spread out a picnic blanket surrounded by trees, the firepit where we made s'mores, the sink(!) where we could wash off said s'mores, and of course the horses. We were there in early spring with not much foliage so you do spy some RVs a little ways off but that might be less true with full foliage. I would recommend this place to anyone with young kids or who just want a really easy but beautiful, if not wild, site to camp. Also, very organized.

29 nights at Little Goat Farm at the Lake

This was the BEST camping at the little goat farm than all the other 22 camp sites we have been. We have cancelled our other camp and asked Bob if we could stay another month. We have really enjoyed feeding chickens, little goats, beautiful alpacas not to mention so much we have learned. The views are spectacular, swimming and fishing the clear clean lake and the exquisite quiet and calm of this land all take my breath away. They dont have many sites available so you are lucky if you can get in plus the other 2 campers have stayed on since last year because they all love being here too. You couldn't ask for better hosts than Bob and Susane!

We loved our night on Kimberly’s land! We have a small campervan and so were able to stay at her Peaceful Pond site, which lived up to its name. The working farm can be seen from the site, but is far enough away to offer the privacy we wanted. It was also nice to have the option of using Kimberly’s clean portapotty. We’d love to return!

Curtis is an amazing host, gave us a very warming welcoming & replied within a reasonable time both times I had a question. The farm looks beautiful, we only stayed for a night & had to leave early so we did not had enough time to explore the place but waking up to the birds chirping, the cows mooing & no cars noise was such a refreshing morning. I highly recommend buying steaks or ribs from him. Meat tastes amazing (everyone loved it), we had to order twice to bring some home. On the side note, make sure to ask them to defrost the meat if you plan on cooking it there. Will definitely go back sometime soon. Other reviews were not wrong about the cleanest pit toilet I’ve seen when camping.

Beautiful 360 degree view at site #1. well kept campsite and grounds. Convenient to Frederick and New Market. Ran into friendly owner while walking dogs, he pointed out how you could see Big roundtop and little roundtop at Gettysburg in the distance which was really cool.

My stay has been amazing. Susane and Bob are very welcoming and kind. Learning how to feed the goats, chickens, alpaca, and donkey is interesting and fun. All of the animals are fed well and cared for. The work makes the day go by fast and there is something to do everyday to keep things interesting. It has been a pleasure to experience what working on a goat farm is all about. I definitely recommend staying.

The Dragon Inn Clearings

This privately owned large home is tucked away on 7+ acres wooded area in scenic semi-secluded neighborhood in La Plata, Charles County. Charles County was created in 1658 by an Order in Council. There was also an earlier Charles County from 1650 to 1653, sometimes referred to in historic documents as Old Charles County. In April 1865, John Wilkes Booth made his escape through Charles County after shooting President Abraham Lincoln. He was on his way to Virginia. John Wilkes Booth fled to southern Maryland, toward Zekiah Swamp. Booth entered the swamp after treatment by Dr. Samuel Mudd for the broken leg he suffered escaping Fords Theater. A black tobacco farmer guided Booth and his co-conspirator David Herold through the swamp to the home of a Confederate sympathizer, Samuel Cox. Cox led Booth and Herold to Thomas A. Jones who helped them the rest of the way through the Zekiah Swamp and across the Potomac River to Virginia. In 1926, a tornado ripped through the county leaving 17 dead (including 13 schoolchildren) and on April 28, 2002, another tornado destroyed much of downtown La Plata. In its path of destruction was our location now known as THE DRAGON INN, the house was completely torn down to its foundation and rebuild in 2003. You can see a marker stone in the brick wall near the garage. This county also has several properties on the National Register of Historic Places. Among them are Green Park and Pleasant Hill, home of the Green and Spalding Families. The Dragon Inn and its all natural wooded backyard, also known as Zekiah Swamp, is part of the Potomac River basin in Charles County, Maryland. The swamp is 21 miles (34 km) of braided stream stretching the length of Charles County and is a tributary of the Potomac River. It sits at an elevation of three feet 90.91 m) and 450 acres (180 ha) of its southern end is protected as the Zekiah Swamp Natural Environment Area. Although the Zekiah Swamp Natural Environment Area is primarily owned by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, it isn't managed for recreation. As a result, there are no paved public access roads, parking areas, or scenic overlooks. Nor are there marked or developed trails, picnic areas, campsites, or visitor's centers. Nonetheless, a limited level of recreational use is still possible. In connection with its Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail system, the U.S. National Park Service notes that access is possible by way of the intersection of U.S. Highway 301 and SR 234 (Budds Creek Road). Traveling east from that point on SR 234, one comes to Penn's Hill Road/Allen’s Fresh Road. Following Allen's Fresh Road south at mile 23.2, there is a dirt road on the west side that leads through the swamp and woods to Allen's Fresh Run of the Wicomico River. This is suitable for driving or walking. Other sight-seeing or photo opportunities are possible with brief stops along the shoulder of SR 234 where it passes through the Natural Environment Area. Similar possibilities exist to the north on SR 6 (Charles Street) that runs between La Plata and Charlotte Hall. If you are feeling adventurous you can explore some paths, clearings and bamboo fields leading to a small creek flowing into the Zekiah Swamp Run directly from our backyard! Learn more about this land:Pitch your tent on our property and enjoy a semi secluded camping experience with the luxury of access to an outdoor bathroom, hand washing station, fire pit and use of swimming pool if you so desire.

Every year in the spring there are 4-6 Thoroughbred foals born that eventually will become racehorses. They live on the farm until they are 2 years old and then they go off to begin their racing career. In the daytime, when you are not sitting around your campfire, you can walk the fence lines and visit with the Mares and Foals or just watch them frolic in the fields. Hint! "They love peppermints, carrots and apples." Who knows, you might get to meet a future Kentucky Derby winner. Peaceful camping with privacy on a 160-acre historic farm! Minutes from Harpers Ferry, Antietam Battlefield and the C&O Canal to name a few. We are within an hour of Gettysburg and within an hour and a half of DC if you're planning a day trip. We have a prime central location with close access to so many things to do. This beautiful property is nestled in a narrow valley between Elk Ridge and South Mountain with incredible sunrises, sunsets and starlit night skies. Walk out to the fishing pond, or follow the trails around the pastures to meet the cattle grazing in our pastures. We have Scottish Highlands and Black Angus grazing as well as Alpacas. We also have beautiful peacocks on the property. We are a working farm so expect to see tractors and you may even see us baling hay or tending to the cattle. You may smell some animal smells which we work at keeping to a minimum but again, we are a working farm. It’s a true farm experience. Also, please keep in mind that during warm weather you may encounter some bugs. Gnats and flies are always a possibility and of course at times they can be worse than others. That can always be a possibility when camping or being outdoors. Bring bug spray, citronella and anything else to help with insects. If you stay by the pond you may hear frogs which personally I enjoy hearing but some may not. Consider bringing a generator and run a fan if you think the sound might bother you or some way to block sounds. We enjoy talking to our guests so feel free to stop us for a chat. At the RV sites you have 30 and 50 amp power as well as water. All the water spickets are potable and drinkable.
