Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Splitrock Farm Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers. Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 200 foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Over 40 miles of coastline includes views to Point Loma, the Carlsbad power station, and the Pendleton Hospital. To the northeast are views of near 11K foot snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with rolling hills of De Luz and Fallbrook in the foreground.

Peaceful Rock in Peaceful Valley
very rustic
I will preface this with the fact that the camp and Hipcamp issued is a full refund for our two nights- we stayed only one. The location is lovely and beautiful. A more accurate description for the camp would be rustic. The facilities are not what is advertised. Filthy flush toilet a 10 minute walk from our site. Never found the showers and did not see anyone to ask. The camp store and amenities listed are worn and weed covered or broken. However, the sites looked well planned with quite a bit of privacy. If you want a very rustic experience, this is your place. If you want clean bathroom and other amenities, then this is not for you.

Granite Tabernacle Private Views
Easy to find. Cool setup and great views. Loved the rock TP. My wife found two three-foot rattlesnakes at our sight right after we setup our tent. So we ended up staying in our tent for the rest of our stay. But it was great that we could bring our four dogs. The wood we ordered was there when we got there. I would recommend but be careful for rattlesnakes. Luckily they were not aggressive.

Splitrock Valley - Jurassic Jungle
My family loved our experience at Splitrock! We stayed at the Jurassic Jungle site, which was well shaded and provided lots of space for our family and friends to spread out. There wasn't much of a stream went we went, but my kids loved walking around the property and seeing all the animals.

The Oak Grove Communal Camp
Queer camping success🏳️‍🌈 happy pride!
My girlfriend and I walked into this campsite with absolutely no expectations but we’re pleasantly surprised by the time we left. When we drove up we were greeted by a herd of goats, sheep and an alpaca to which we stopped to pet. Macy guided us through the canyon to our campsite where there was a grove of oak trees offering shade to a scorching hot day. We set up our tent and took a little nap under the shade and when we awoke we decided to hike and climb rocks which was super fun. At night we set up our fire pit and roasted s’mores after we cooked some burgers with the helpful amenities they offered like the sink to wash dishes and bathrooms super close by, it was convenient as frick!!! I will say this is extremely wilderness vibes as we were alerted of rattlesnakes, heard coyotes, saw a toad, baby scorpions and a fuck ton of bugs so beware. We were greeted by the camps guard dog who chilled with us for a bit before making his rounds which made me feel super safe! We made breakfast in the morning and despite the creepy crawlers (which I’m not a huge fan of but amazing site nonetheless) we had a great camping trip here with the help of Macy and Bianca.

Splitrock Valley - Vista
Not quite what we were hoping for
I’m not sure if we got picked a bad site or what, but this campsite was not what we were expecting. On a high note, there was quite a lot of “tech” to help you figure out where to go. They have an interactive google map which generally directs you around, but this particular site, the Splitrock valley - vista one didn’t have a sign of its own (unlike the others). Only two tents marked “home” and “unwind”. After driving around a bit and messaging the host, they confirmed this was, in fact, our site. We brought our own tent and gear and were hoping to use that, but there wasn’t really space for that because the rest of the plot was not flat enough to sleep comfortably. The site had graffiti on the rocks near the tent, a “fire pit” which was a ring of rocks smashed up against a bigger rock, and the site was covered in foxtails (which was a non-starter for us tracking w/dogs). The “camp host” was for a separate camp site (oak glen) and didn’t have any useful information to get us started. Fortunately for us, we are local so we were able to drive back home. Overall, it was certainly an adventure, but not the one we were looking for.
