Streife translated from Norwegian means roam. The right to roam, also called the right of access, or everyman's right(“allemannsretten”) is a traditional right from ancient times, and since 1957 has also been a part of the Norwegian Outdoor Recreation Act. It ensures that everybody gets to experience nature, even on larger privately owned areas. In our travels to Norway, we learned of this law and loved the concept so much we brought it back with us to America. Yet we had no land to offer. So, we searched...and searched....and searched some more. Then we found what would become camp Streife. 20 acres of uncut timber growth forest, tucked in the hills of Rumford Maine. With a nearby brook, pond and within 20 minutes of some of our favorite ski locations it was just right. The rules of this law are simple. Be considerate and thoughtful. Don't damage nature and other surroundings. Leave the landscape as you would want to find it. Leave no trace. You may put up a tent, or sleep under the stars, for the night anywhere in the countryside, forests or mountains, as long as you keep at least 500 feet away from the nearest inhabited house or cabin. This rule of 500 feet distance also applies to camping cars and caravans. If you want to stay for more than two nights in the same place, you must ask the landowner's permission, except in the mountains or very remote areas. Well, we've taken care of all those Allemannsretten rules for you. We invite you to our small part of the world and encourage you to exercise your right to roam. Great spot, if I’m back in the area I’d definitely look into staying again. Getting to the camp wasn’t bad in my truck, but might be more difficult in a sedan or something. Still probably doable. The site itself it’s nice. Tucked away and feels very private. It has a nice wooden tent pad, a fire pit, and a table. We stayed two nights and had a great time. Did some of the hikes nearby. Even saw two otters at the pond up the road.

Amazing spot! Has everything you need for a private getaway in the woods. Adrian was very helpful and the space was easy to find with directions. Definitely go check out the lake, it's stunning!

This spot was the respite we needed from busy city life. From kayaking on glassy pond water to our quiet camp site we felt safe and secluded. Hosts were communicative and clear and we enjoyed our stay

My boyfriend and I were absolutely astounded at the beauty of this camp! We are both New Englanders and have seen many years of leaves turning and the pure enjoyment of camping (as we do primitive camping almost every weekend during the sunny months), I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about the platform, the gravel entrance, the fire pit, walkway to the tent platform, the bench, adorable birdhouse, the seclusion, everything! I could go on! The little absolutely stunning pond, the heads up directions from the owner, absolutely down to earth caring vibe that you get from Adrian is bar none! The pond is the silent nature floating we were both dying for. On the way up to any camp we always start searching for wood in a close proximity to the camp, and made a joke that we had seen none by the time we got there, which we were fine with. And boom! A fresh two arm load of wood waiting for us! *big smiles*! Didn’t I say I could go on, because I really can about this site! Bring your porta-pooper and your star gazing eyes and you are in camp heaven! Thanks again Adrian! Cheers!

Beauty and privacy
A solid tucked away spot. It was a nice piece of land off of a locked gravel road. We met a neighbor on the road (Pete) he was a great guy. The stars were beautiful, felt very private and safe.
