Underworld Farms is a small goat ranch in the Kern River Valley. Surrounded by forestry land, on the Kern River, and on top of what used to be the old town of Whiskey Flat (Later re-named Kernville). There is no end to the beauty, history and adventure all around the property. Life took us to the Kern River Valley after moving out of Los Angeles. We enjoy living in the Southern Sierras immersed in all its natural beauty. The small but magnificent town of Kernville is approximately two and a half miles north of us. Our livestock includes horses, dairy goats, sheep, and rabbits: Most of which are raised and bred as 4H or FFA projects. You may be wondering why our farm is called "Underworld Farms". In a nutshell, since our ranch is on the footprint of the historic town of Whiskey Flat, we just happen to be south of the old Whiskey Flat "Boot Hill" Cemetery. Our "driveway" is the road that led from the old town of Kernville to the cemetery. We hope that you consider parking your RV, van conversion, or trailer on one of our customized spots on the property. Or enjoy a stay in one of our small cabins or trailers. Regardless of what you stay in, you will definitely have a memorable time. *** THE PIN MAP ON HIPCAMP IS NOT 100% ACCURATE. PLEASE REFFER TO THE MAP OF THE PROPERTY IN THE PHOTOS

The "Living on the Hard" sailboat
Not the comfiest but it is pretty!
Overall loved the novelty of staying on the boat. My partner and I really wanted to be near the water and were able to walk to two “day use” areas near the campsite. Since the campsite is located right where the lake meets the upper kern river, the current was pretty mellow and we were able to float in the water near the shore with no problems. It was also fun to go and say Hi to the horses and goats! I wish we were made aware of a few things before booking. 1. There appeared to be artificial hives on the property? My partner is allergic to bees so we had a hard time with the amount of bees nearby during the day. Thankfully we were gone for most of daylight. 2. I find it hard to believe more people are not writing about the ‘bed’ inside the boat. My partner and I are both 5’6” 160 lbs each and we could not sleep together on the mattress comfortably. One slept in the cabin on the bench and the other on the mattress. If you are a light sleeper, beware this boat makes a sound at the slightest movement during sleep. If there is any wind outside it will make loud noises. 3. The outhouses were full of cobwebs and completely unusable to my own standards. I’d rather use the outdoors. (Not a big deal, we were camping) This all being said, the hosts were very nice and gave great direction. They have a cool eclectic property that we enjoyed for a night. Would love to stay in the miners shack next time!

Unique Waterside Stay
We had a wonderful time in the quiet waterside serentity of Underworld Farm. Our sleeping arrangement was a little small for our 2 larger bodies but we enjoyed the ambiance and would definitely stay with the farm again! The grounds are a beautiful space with lots of options for groups too. We thought we would love to come back with more friends again. The River and Lake were nice getaway from city life. Thank you for the amenities and vibes camp hosts!

The "Living on the Hard" sailboat
Cool unique experience
Awesome property located minutes from Wofford Heights as well as Kernville. Several reviews described the sailboat as “rustic” which is fairly accurate. You’re not getting anything luxurious here but it is definitely different, a cool unique experience, something for us as a family to look back on and be happy that we did it. The bed at the front of the boat was a bit cramped for my partner and I, and while it is memory foam I still had a difficult time sleeping. My back is very sensitive to anything other than my bed at home, so I know it is probably comfortable for others. Fair warning though for any tough sleepers like me, it’s like a 4 or 5 inch memory foam topper, not a full on mattress. My son is very tall and fit easily on the bench that serves as the second bed. It wasn’t terribly comfortable but if you double up on the cushions it’s better. It was super windy while we were there, you could feel it rocking in the wind, but the boat is secured nicely. If you’re looking for a unique place with a good amount of privacy, close proximity to the river and minutes from town, this is the place for you!

The "Living on the Hard" sailboat
Uniquely Perfect!
This camping experience truly had it all: close proximity to water, farm animals to admire, cool sleeping arrangements, fire pit, just enough seclusion, beautiful weather, plentiful photo ops and incredible stargazing! We stayed for 2 nights in March and it was just enough time to have a full day exploring, to cook on the campfire a few times and to see 2 sunsets & 2 sunrises. I am NOT a big camping person, and this spot made it easy for me to settle in and enjoy my time. Helpful tips for future folks who stay here - bring a head lamp, many layers (to wear and for bedding/sleeping), and chairs to use while sitting around the fire! I also would recommend that if 2 people are sleeping together in the main sleeping space, that they be very comfortable with being cozy. My 6'3/270 lb male fiance and I (5'4, 150 lb female) fit perfectly, but anyone larger than that combo may have a tough time. All in all, if you are thinking about staying here, just book it! You will have a memorable and relaxing time on Esteban's beautiful land!
