Nearly wild camping in the Peak District National Park, near Buxton

The Peak District is one of the best places for an outdoorsy holiday and outdoorsy types will be right at home at Burr Manor Wild Camping. As the name suggests, the site offers uncomplicated camping in the grounds of a big house. It’s a three-acre field with simple facilities and simply lovely views – a winning combination if you’re looking for a scenic place to get back to basics. Having said that, this wilderness is not as far off the beaten track as it might feel when you’re sitting round the campfire at night. There’s a pub less than a mile down the road and the spa town of Buxton is just ten minutes’ drive away.

Tents, campervans, and motorhomes are all welcome here and, however you prefer to camp, you can choose your own spot in the field. It’s all off grid and where you pitch is up to you but wherever you go you’ll have a view. The site is on the outskirts of Chelmorton, Derbyshire’s highest village, which means you can look out across the Peak District National Park. But it comes with a couple of footnotes too. The ground is not perfectly flat, it’s not mown, and manicured – and when the wind blows you’ll feel it up here. Those who will like it, though, won’t be put off by such things, after all this is nearly wild camping. And if you’re used to that, the site’s facilities (five flushing loos, two hot water showers, and a washing-up sink) will feel like luxuries.

After washing the smell of campfire smoke from your hair, you might fancy a trip into well-to-do Buxton or, in the other direction, to the Chatsworth Estate, which is only a few miles away. Alternatively, embrace your inner wild child and stick with the outdoor adventures. You might, for example, cycle the traffic-free Monsal Trail, skip across stepping stones at Chee Dale, hike across Kinder Scout, or rock climb at Stanage Edge. From here, the Peak District’s wild and not-so-wild space are all yours to explore.

Very quiet, open space. Pick where you want to pitch with amazing views. Ideally located for the Peak District! Beautiful rolling hills of Derbyshire. Close to Chelmorton Village and the Monsal Trail. A lovely quiet spot with the local pub just a 20 minute walk through the countryside. Walking or cycling, this spot has a lot to offer.

Probably fine without 2am singalong
19 ft Class B · With pets
Might have been an unlucky experience but our arrival was met with a demand for money (even when i explained i'd booked and paid through PitchUp), quite busy and a lot of camps had speakers so at points we could hear 3 different songs at once, it did mostly quieten down later on except for our neighbours who decided to have a noisy and tuneless sing-a-long at 2am. We may have just chosen a bad evening to go, but we won't be going again.

Nearby attractions

Burrs Manor is within the Peak District National Park so it almost goes without saying that it’s a good base from which to go walking, cycling, climbing and caving. The campsite is a short distance from the village of Chelmorton, just three miles from Chee Dale nature reserve, Blackwell Mill and the start of the traffic-free cycle route, the Monsal Trail. If you haven’t brought your bike, you can hire one so you can ride this 11-mile trail on the route of a former railway. The spa town of Buxton is just five miles from site with elegant architecture to enjoy on a meander of its streets. Poole’s Cavern, limestone caves, and the surrounding Buxton Country Park are on the outskirts of the town. In the other direction, Bakewell is eight miles away and Chatsworth House is not much further. To the north, is the Hope Valley and the are higher peaks and crags to discover like Stanage Edge, all within half an hour’s drive of site.

Food and drink

You can walk to the village pub, The Church Inn, which is less than a mile away. It’s a traditional and historic pub with a lovely setting on the village green and a good menu of pub classics – but it’s popular so it’s advisable to book in advance. Another good pub, a bit further afield, is The Royal Oak (just under five miles away). Alternatively, if you want to cater for yourselves, head to Tideswell where you’ll find the closest shops (ten minutes’ drive) or to Buxton, five miles away, where you’ll find a range of independent shops and supermarkets too. There are also lots of eateries to choose from in town.
