A shepherd’s hut for two on a farm in the Devonshire countryside

Sitting in the peaceful countryside on the Devon-Cornwall border, The Hive is half an hour from the beach at Bude, half an hour from Clovelly and half an hour from Dartmoor too. It’s a super-sized shepherd’s hut positioned in an excellent spot if you want to explore all that the West Country has to offer. And some of its highlights are right here on Bradford Manor Farm. This is glorious rural Devon with views all the way to Dartmoor on a clear day. You can walk through orchards, past fields of grazing cattle down to the River Torridge where you might just spot an otter.

To set you off in the right direction, your welcoming hosts here, Faye and Paul, will furnish you with a map of the farm. They live in the farmhouse near the paddock where the shepherd’s hut is located. And they’ve made the hut pretty homely too. It’s a spacious one with a proper-sized double bed, a kitchenette with an oven, a log burner, a hot shower and a loo that flushes. This is a self-catering cabin that has everything you might need from a holiday home. Though it’s worth mentioning that the fridge is a few steps away in another space that’s all yours – a pitched roofed shed that’s fun as well as functional. As well as the fridge there’s a dart board and a few other games and bits and bobs plus space to store bikes and surf boards.

You might want to bring those with you. After all, some of Cornwall and Devon’s best beaches are within easy reach of here. Bude is the headline news – it’s just 16 miles away, about 30 minutes by car. Widemouth Bay and Crackington Haven are not much further. On the Devon side, there are the cliffs and coves of Hartland and the quaint fishing village of Clovelly. Inland, of course, there are plenty of country walks including those on the farm and those out on the moor.

Relax in our beautiful Shepherd Hut which is in a small hamlet setting with its own Manor House church and nestled on our conservation farm in gorgeous North Devon. Enjoy the views of Dartmoor on a clear day. Take a walk down to the river or spend time fishing. Enjoy walking through our cider apple orchards get to see the farm animals including our herd of Herdwick sheep . Cook up a storm on our BBQ which is perfect for alfresco dining on the patio at The Hive, or if you prefer to eat out find a delightful Devon or Cornish pub or restaurant to while away the evening. During the day drink in the beautiful blue skies and in the evening marvel at the stunning starlit nights.

Oh Bee-Hive!
With kids
Absolutely stunning! The Hive is finished to an exceptionally high standard; we REALLY enjoyed our stay. It's cosy, warm and oozing style. After a dreamy sleep, we rose to unforgettable view across the Devonshire countryside. We had fresh eggs from the on-site chickens, saw deer and pheasants to boot! The owners Paul and Faye were extremely communicative prior to our stay, making sure we could find the hut easily and that there was someone available to greet us upon arrival. They were so friendly; they even took us on a tour of their farm a short distance away to meet the cows! The Hive is perfectly situated to be able to explore North Devon or Cornwall, we were at the beach in Bude in half an hour and The Eden Project in an hour. It could also be the perfect stopover if travelling further into Cornwall. We will definitely be visiting again and would highly recommend it to all.

Beautiful larger than average modern equipped Shepherds Hut nestled in a conservation farm of 144 acres within the glorious Devon countryside but within short distance of the Cornish coastline and its stunning beaches and coves, Dartmoor Exmoor and Bodmin Moor. Hiking, walking, fishing, bird and wild life watching, farm animals, orchards, stunning views and peace.
Nearby attractions

The Hive is on Bradford Manor Farm about seven miles from the town of Holsworthy. You can go on a nice walk without leaving the 144-acre farm and your hosts provide you with a map and can suggest local routes, including a wander of the nearby National Trust protected Dunsland Estate. You can reach the banks of the River Torridge without leaving the farm. It’s great for wildlife watching and offers an option for wild swimmers too. The closest beaches are around Bude (16 miles). Summerleaze is the main town beach and offers a sea pool if the water is not calm enough for a swim. But you might be after surf and you’ll find that here too with plenty of opportunities for surf lessons and board hire in the town. Kayaker and surfers might want to head for the calmer waters of Bude Canal. The Hartland Heritage Coast is a great place for coastal walks on the South West Coast Path and the historic, traffic-free, cobbled streets of Clovelly (18 miles) are a popular spot to head for. The market town of Okehampton (also 18 miles) sits on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and is a great gateway if you want to explore the moor. Head for the Museum of Dartmoor Life for information on the area’s history and places to visit.

Food and drink

The closest pub is The Bickford Arms (two miles) which serves food at lunch and dinner everyday. It also does pizzas which are available to takeaway. The Devil’s Stone Inn in Shebbear (four miles) is another good option; a traditional Devonshire inn offering good food and a beer garden. There’s a village shop in Shebbear too. For more than what’s on offer there, head for the market town of Holsworthy (seven miles) where there are independent shops and a choice of small supermarkets too, plus plenty more cafes and eateries.
