Surrounded by forest is this tiny house, built back in the late nineties with a beautiful sunset view over looking a small meadow and garden. The ‘shack’, built with an artist flare and small budget by a close friend and his wife features, a small kitchen with stained glass; inlayed between the logs creating a cozy place to create a meal with herbs and seasonal veggies from the garden!Located in the foothills of upstate South Carolina in the heart of Sumter National Forest, just a couple miles from lake Tugaloo and the Chattooga River, stands the Tumbledown Shack. The cabin features a small kitchen and a cozy nook for relaxing. The kitchen offers a double sink with cold water only. A small four burner stovetop and pie table top for preparing food. The oven is out of order at the moment. Entering the kitchen you will notice stained glass in between the tiny logs. Lit on the inside by the light of day and at night outside is lit from the inside lights. Also in the kitchen area is a small cozy sleeping nook. There is an upstairs bedroom with a full sized bed and window views on three sides. Downstairs is a small room with a single bed. On the east side of the shack is an outdoor toilet that is private and covered. Outside the cabin facing west features a porch and outdoor kitchen and seating area set up for cooking with wood either on the pot belly stove or over an open grill in the fire pit that is built into the retaining wall. West of the cabin is a tent site and picnic table on your way to the garden area. Also there are many spots to pitch a tent in the woods surrounding the property.

Tumbledown Shack
Peaceful place of zen in the woods.
Richie is a great host. The site is a wonderful retreat from a busy world. I don't know if you can all it a covered deck or a front porch, but that spot is simply wonderful. We stayed four days and it rained a little everyday, but on the deck/porch we were dry and happy. The rain sounded peaceful on the tin roofs. JZ, the camp dog, came to check on us now and again. The cabin has a crafted, artist's flare. We were cool and comfortable at night. I loved the upstairs bedroom. Outside the grounds are lush with trees and bushes. The fire ring is well constructed and we had fires every night. Pro tip: Write in the guest book before you start packing up. Sorry, Richie, that's on me, but I did draw a picture of the cabin.

Tumbledown Shack
Everything went well!! Richie is a kind a thoughtful host, he even built an outdoor shower for our stay! He told us where to find wild raspberries and to help ourselves to the veggie garden. The shack is cozy and eclectic; something different to see no matter where you look. Tons of electrical outlets, and the FANCIEST outhouse ever. Will definitely be back; I want to see how the place progresses!

Tumbledown Shack
Gr8 one nite stay
Very quiet setting in a cute shack with lots of character! Watching the sun set off the porch then later the bonfire was relaxing. Richie stopped by a couple times to make sure all is well & share some of the history of the grounds, and his dog Daisy was friendly chilling with my dog.

Tumbledown Shack
We had an amazing time here! Richie was a great host and his dog Daisy was a frequent guest visitor to the site. We loved that there were so many unique features, from the inset glass in the cabin to the (flushing!) toilet set in the world’s coolest outhouse. The propane stove was a great thing to have access to when it rained and we needed to cook inside, and the property itself was gorgeous and convenient to hiking, Humble Pie (Coffee! Pizza!). The fire circle with benches and provided wood made for two great nights around the fire. All in all, a perfect trip!

Tumbledown Shack
New family favorite
Richie is a new friend. He was wonderful and so is the shack. We welcomed Richie to hang out with us. He built us a fire lickedy-split and we relaxed on the fire circle’s beautiful wooden bench carved from a single curved tree. My husband raved about the fresh mountain air. Our pets (cockatoo and dog) were welcomed. Tons of open space, natural forest, private, remote, comfortable, incredible charm. 9-year old boy loved it too. Richie builds amazing things with rocks and trees- you have to see it for yourself. Enjoy.
