Share space on our small mountain homestead in the Appalachians. Stay in a tiny cabin with deck space and outdoor food prep area. Twin over Futon bunk bed(or a guest could sleep on the porch sofa which is a futon, if the weather is good. Drinking water provided if requested. Chicken, dogs and cats on the farm. Our homestead is located up a steep gravel road and though the property is secluded, the cabin is near the main house. It is a Family atmosphere and a living farm so there will be noise from domestic and wild animals. Unplug and reconnect with Nature. No Wi-Fi or electricity, but a mini solar panel charges a light. Be aware there are snakes and spiders; creepy crawlers of all types. We are a chemical free property, please don’t bring toxins onto the site (this includes chemical bug sprays). We’ll help remove critters as needed. Elevation 1200ft; we’re 1/4 mile from Shenandoah National Park. Guided hikes and farm tours available (for a fee) if interested! We also have eggs for sale when our chickens are laying.Come stay in a secluded, relaxed environment where you can unplug and reconnect with Nature. Take naps, sit by the campfire, quietly read or meditate without being attached to your daily gadgets. Take in the mountain air and allow yourself to balance mind, body and spirit. My husband and I first lived on this property shortly after marrying 17 yrs ago, we moved to AK and back in 2013 and have been building our homestead from the ground up ever since. We love this mountain and consider our home a Beautiful Magical Place! We daily connect with the glorious natural elements surrounding us and give thanks constantly. We’ve learned a lot over the years about living with The Land and want to share this space with like-minded others. We tend to “rise with the Sun, and sleep when it’s done”, so don’t be surprised if you see David or myself, or our kids playing/working on site. If you like to chat, we’re usually available, if you like your privacy, we respect that too. There are a handful of neighbors, and sometimes cars travel up or down the road, but generally this is a quiet, peaceful area. Our two old time scotch collies keep most wildlife away, but once in a while you get a glimpse of turkey, or hawks, rabbits, etc…. Hiking and exploring the woods is welcome, but don’t stray to the neighbors We recently acquired a rare chicken breed, Scots Dumpies, and are trying to increase the flock, so there may be a chance to see baby chicks. The Stars do their thing on clear nights and are an amazing sight with the near zero light pollution. We love to view the stars and Moon in all her phases. We try to keep your need to bring much to a minimum, so we provide plenty of blankets and pillows ( or sleeping bag if desired), dishes and some cookware for over-the-fire meals, towels and wash cloths if a rain barrel “cat bath” is in order :), hand soap and toilet paper too! Life is in constant fluctuation up here at our mountain home, which is how we like it! Camp out with us and see why!Share space on our small mountain homestead in the Appalachians. Collie Cottage
Perhaps not for cold cold nights
Host was great, helpful and responsive. The spot in the mountains is lovely. I booked for a very cold night and was not able to stay warm- the stove heater wasn't working for me and I ended up leaving early. Host was accommodating. I'd stay here in warmer months.

A camp ground would be better!!!
So, the big buckets to bathe that were offered are literally in full view of their house. I thought I could wash myself. Not happening. It was basically rain water in a big tub. Also, the outhouse was literally a bucket on top of a toilet seat. Yea, not happening! The room was cute, but the walls and the ceiling did not meet and bugs got in all night. I felt like gnats bit me all night. I had to put my sleeping bag over my head all night. We left after the 2nd night and stayed in a hotel. I had to poop in the woods, pee in the woods and felt like I was being watched. The owners were nice, but not for me.

We loved staying at the Collie Cottage! Our hosts were incredibly responsive. The property is beautiful and the view of the stars at night is beautiful. Definitely a great place if you want to camp but don’t want to worry about setting up a tent.

Collie Cottage
I've stayed at the cottage three times within the last year -- it's become my little safe haven and I intend on coming back whenever I need some Shenandoah mountain time! I love the whole set up -- comfy cabin vibes inside, useful front porch, spacious & beautiful surroundings. On clear nights, you can see the rest of the milky way and shooting stars! Best not to leave any food inside as some mice might poke around. I personally love the primitive aspects, though. During colder weather, it was a treat to experience the well-working wood stove for heat at night.
