Weekends can get kind of crowded. I'd suggest a weekday.
OK, we just got back from a week at Kelley's Island State Park. I agree on the comment about the ferry cost- 2 persons + car cost $76 round trip. I also felt squeezed by my camp neighbors more this time- tents pitched less than 10ft away. I had to listen to a total stranger snore loudly all night for a week- that I did not enjoy. The noise factor was way up this year- the tractor that rakes the beach comes around 7:30am so that is loud. Camp noise was much louder this time overall. We will look into staying out on PIB (South Bass island) campground next time- tent sites are more private there.
You have to take the ferry to get to this state park. Keep that in mind if you have an RV. We found out it's rather expensive to get here. Keep track of your return ticket also. If you lose it - that's more money you're out.
We camped here in 2006. Site 100. Not a bad site, but not near the water. I marked site 83 as the best. any from 83-104 would be good. They have electricity. Modern bathrooms. We spent 4 nights & that was plenty.
The hiking is good. There's the glacial grooves, which Kelley's Island is famous for. There's some historical sites in town.
I'm glad we went, but will not ever go back.
Kelley's is way prettier than HipCamp's banner image of the quarry! Camped here in 2014 and will be returning 2016 to the same site. Although this is a state campground and is pretty compact, (not very private), we still had a great time at tent site 118. Tents-only area near the swimming beach is directly across the road from the glacial grooves. Camp entrance, ice, firewood, small snack shop are very close. Toilets and showers are clean, plentiful. Best tent sites are naturally at the farthest end of the road. Kelley's is a great, laid back family place. Bike, swim, hike and just relax. Annual circus comes over on the ferry every Aug. first week.
Camped here in August 2015. Could not rate this campground higher…clean facilities, great ambience, and just all around pleasant. Highly recommend for the young family or older camper and everyone in between.
