The buildings and tents of the approximately 10,000 miners who lived in this area are long gone. But the scenic views, peacefulness and quiet of this rugged area of south central Alaska are not soon forgotten. There are no paved trails or boardwalks. No crowds or hot dog vendors. Imagine fishing without crowds--catching pink and silver salmon or trout with awesome views of the Chugach National Forest. Don't expect amenities. This is camping outdoors in Alaska. There is a communal firepit with a portable firepit and grill that can be moved to whereever you set up your tent. Usually your group will be alone on your adventure here. There is nothing like this location anywhere else along Turnagain Arm.

A gem on the Western side of the mouth of Cochrane Bay, Surprise Cove State Marine Park is one of the most popular places to anchor your boat in Prince William Sound. Visitors can choose from seven campgrounds on various terrains—gravel beach, island wetlands, dry coastline—take your pick! You’ll get great use out of your motorboats, sailboats, and kayaks here. You can also explore the chilly streams, mossy muskegs, rocky beaches, dense forests, and sparkling lakes of the park on foot, so bring your hiking gear. The small town of Whittier is a short drive away, where you can stock up on any supplies you need before heading out on your adventure. Don’t forget your camera for shots of bald eagle, moose, and humpback whales. Surprise, indeed!
