Overview

About

Camping near War Horse National Wildlife Refuge promises a thrilling encounter with a diverse range of wildlife and bird species. This refuge, founded in 1958, serves as a crucial habitat and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife, contributing to the rich tapestry of Montana's biodiversity. War Horse NWR stands as a pivotal staging and nesting location for waterfowl, shorebirds, and other migratory birds. However, its importance extends beyond temporary avian visitors. This land is a year-round haven for a myriad of resident species, including pronghorn, mule deer, greater sage grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, and gray partridge. The refuge is divided into three distinct units: War Horse Lake, Wild Horse Lake, and Yellow Water Reservoir. All these areas are accessible for wildlife observation, and hunting is also permitted. In particular, Yellow Water Reservoir offers additional recreational activities like boating and fishing, appealing to outdoor enthusiasts with diverse interests. The refuge is a fantastic spot for birdwatching, particularly during the spring and fall migration seasons. However, don't limit your wildlife spotting to birds alone! War Horse is renowned for its re-established elk population, descendants of those originally from Yellowstone National Park in 1951. Also keep an eye out for the ferrets that were introduced in 1993 and the sprawling black-tailed prairie dog towns, which the ferrets rely on. Early spring is also a great time to spot sage grouse engaging in their courtship displays. Other bird species to watch for include mountain plovers, peregrine falcons, and long-billed curlews. Overall,a War Horse National Wildlife Refuge camping expedition is an immersion into nature's vibrancy, offering a captivating glimpse of Montana's wildlife.

When to go
