Lawrence Ranch

Lawrence Ranch is located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Much of our ranch is grazing land and crop land that are leased out as our family is no longer actively ranching. Our camp sites are up near the ranch house, but you're welcome to hike the ranch property. Lots of animals are about - deer, coyotes, skunks, prairie dogs, birds, and the occasional mountain lion. While we're not quite as dark as a dark sky park, it's very dark here, and the sky watching is superb. We're on the edge of the badlands, and the land is hilly, with a creek, hills, and buttes. A water spigot is available for campers to get water near the old corral. We are just 15 minutes' drive from the Wounded Knee Memorial, 20 minutes from the Lakota Art Space & Oglala Lakota College Heritage Center, and 35 minutes from the Heritage Center at Maȟpíya Lúta (formerly Red Cloud Indian School). We're also about 20 minutes from the Badlands National Park. About 90 minutes driving brings you to Rapid City, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, and all the sight seeing in the Black Hills.

Overview

About

Ahhh, the heartland. Wide open spaces of undeveloped land in which to spread your wings and find some breathing room. Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands is one of these places, comprised of two forests of ponderosa pine and three grassland areas. Come here to set up your temporary little house on the prairie and be a pioneer camper for a while! Wandering and exploring is unrestricted for non-motorized travel here, meaning freedom is yours for the taking! If you don’t want to just head into the abyss, try visiting the nation's oldest federal tree nursery (awww, baby trees!), or the largest extinct bison boneland in the world at the Hudson-Meng Bison Research Center. Or, head to Soldier Creek Wilderness Area for a little rewilding and backcountry exploration. Keep your eyes peeled for prairie dogs and wildflowers popping their cute little heads up, rock formations dotting the landscape, and magic around every turn. There’s a lot going on in that grass!
