Low Gear Farmstead

32 sites · RVs, Tents75 acres · Menard, TX
Get into low gear and enjoy the slow pace and peace of our little working farm on the edge of the hill country. Low Gear Farmstead's 75 acres border the lovely San Saba River, providing campers the opportunity to swim, wade, fish and paddle. Farm animals including dairy goats, chickens, and horses inhabit the property, but wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, ringtail, fox and armadillo is also abundant. Bird watchers will be delighted at the diversity of birds, especially in spring. Don't forget to look up at night as our dark skies provide excellent stargazing on clear nights and a very visible Milky Way. We limit the number of campsites and spread them out so that campers may enjoy privacy and seclusion. Campsites are provided with compost toilets and most sites also have a fire ring. 4WD is not required unless we have had heavy rains, otherwise most vehicles, except very low clearance ones, do fine. The nearest town, Menard, is about a 12 minute drive from the property and has a grocery store, gas stations, a couple restaurants, a pub and a bakery. Lovers of history might enjoy visiting the Presidio de San Saba, about 20 minutes from the farm, as well as the historic Pioneers Rest Cemetery in town. Low Gear Farmstead is a safe, welcoming space for queers and POC.

Laf ranch

34 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents1100 acres · Medina, TX
1100 acres of gorgeous natural land at the headwaters of the Medina River. Crystal clear and clean spring feed water. Fourth-generation family owners. Remote camping. Very private with plenty of varied terrain for hiking swimming, tubing, biking or just hanging out in a hammock enjoying the breeze and peace and quiet. About 2 miles as a crow flies from Lost Maples State Park. You drive through a 13,000-acre ranch to get to us. We are at the end of a dead-end road with one way in and one way out. NO FISHING Free firewood for use during your stay and can make a good deal if you want to take some home! As our topo map shows we have a wide variety of terrain ranging from steep cliffs with huge views to shady canyons. The river cuts through the middle of the place and is surrounded by four hills that each have their unique characteristics ranging from flat oak-covered to rocky steep ridges. I guarantee you will find beauty all around. We do have a couple of fun areas to try your 4-wheel drive out. Please dont make your own....stay on trails. There are plenty of places to swim. When the Ladder is reserved, you may not swim there. Please be respectful. We have approximatley 1.5 miles of both sides of the river so plenty of places to swim. It varies a lot in depth and width over the ranch. Every camp spot has access to all the swimming holes except the ladder when it is booked. The main swimming holes are-- 1. Below the Green Cabin 2. Another my brother likes that has a cypress tree submerged you can sit on he calls the 1000 waterfalls 3. What we call the big pond which has the beginnings of a zip line if i can re-engineer how i have it tied on the opposite bank..right now its not high enough on the opposite bank. The goal is to zip line from one bank to the opposite and drop into the water...about 150 ft. It may or may not stay once we try it out...dont anyone getting hurt...But I think zip lines are a blast and we need to do a few rope swings into the water too! Cabin at the Ranch - Harper, TX

1 site · Lodging84 acres · Harper, TX
The Ranch is our place we like to go when we need to get away.  It's raw and it's nice land to camp, explore and enjoy wildlife.  We have a Wildlife Exemption on the property and enjoy managing native song birds.  We keep a constant flow of bird seed located in feeders around the ranch, and we have seen all kinds of birds making this a great place for birders. The ranch has nice elevation changes with a wet weather creek that traverses the property,  There are some trails to hike or mountain bike. The cabin is rustic, but we enjoy it and it's fun to think it's everything we would need.  This is off-grid living all the way, and we are constantly learning new and better ways to do things.  The cabin is located on the very first spot we pitched a tent after purchasing the land, and we continue to make improvements as we go.  We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

The best camping near South Llano River State Park guide

Overview

About

Hiking, biking, tubing, and turkeys, oh my! You'll definitely stay busy in this park, with two miles of river frontage. Multiple put-in and take-out points give tubers plenty of opportunities to rest or explore.

Bird watching is a favorite activity, and more than 250 species have been recorded. Located within the park is one of the largest turkey roosts in Central Texas. The park's day-use hours are restricted Oct. 1 through March 31, the roosting season.

Mountain bikers and hikers find plenty of challenges on 22.7 miles of trails. The more difficult trails cross river bottoms and traverse steep ridges. These hill country trails provide amazing views and the occasional spotting of white-tailed deer.

Standard campsites have water and electric hookups, and there are five primitive hike-in sites. Staying the night is a must because the stargazing here is phenomenal. Low light pollution results in a dark sky that highlights the Milky Way.

Notable campgrounds

  • Standard Campsites provide water and electric hookups, with convenient access to restrooms and showers.
  • Walk-in Tent Sites offer a more secluded camping experience, with water access and nearby restroom facilities.
  • Primitive Hike-in Sites cater to the adventurous, featuring a chemical toilet and no water, for a true backcountry feel.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially if you plan to visit during the busy season from March through October.
  • Check for cancellations regularly, as plans change and spots may open up unexpectedly.
  • Consider visiting during the off-peak season for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Explore nearby camping options if the park is full, ensuring you have a backup plan.

When to go

The best time to visit South Llano River State Park is from March through October, when the park's full splendor is on display. However, be mindful that these months also mark the busiest season. For a more tranquil visit, consider the cooler months, though the first freeze typically occurs in early November and the last in early April.

Know before you go

  • Check water safety tips and park rules before engaging in river activities to ensure a safe visit.
  • Reservations are recommended for both camping and day use to guarantee entry, as the park often reaches capacity.
  • Be aware of turkey roosting season from October 1 through March 31, with restricted day use hours to protect wildlife.
  • Prepare for the weather; January averages a low of 32°F, while July can soar to 94°F.
  • Don't miss the chance to stargaze at this International Dark Sky Park; consider staying late for a night fee.
