Wake up surrounded by petrified wood forests and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument when you spend the night at Escalante Petrified Campground.

Deep, winding slot canyons veer off in all directions, rainbow-striped petrified wood flanks all the trails, and you can even see fossilized dinosaur bones! And the best part of these sites? You’re right on the banks of the Wide Hollow Reservoir, a great spot to fish, swim, boat, and just generally cool off in the middle of a hot Utah day. Many sites offer shelter if it does get hot (also great if it rains), and some offer views of the lake—this loop is smaller, though, so book early. You’ll be sleeping right at the trailhead of the Petrified Forest, so rest up under the stars ‘cause you’ll be exploring all day long!

If they are full you can go onto hole in the rock road and camp for free because it’s BLM land. If you set to camp at that park tho you can wait till right when the park closes and they will give you a place to set up your tent by the picnic tables.

This site has a nice reservoir adjacent to the camping site. Sites are paved and not too much shade, as it is not located at a very high elevation. They are also close together. Tradeoff is that there are hot showers (8 min. max., then they shut off and won't go back on for 9 minutes), potable water, a dish washing station (with one of those huge commercial sprayers) and flushing toilets and running water sinks. It is not primitive by any means, but makes a nice place to get in a shower in between stays at more remote or primitive camp sites.
