Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. We'd like to share the camp with others and see it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.

Site 8 (aka Fox 2)
The campsite was well maintained and far enough from other campers. Close to hiking trails and the host Adam was very accommodating and responded to my emails in a timely manner.

Just spent our second visit there. We are going to continue to go back. It is set back off the road, quiet and peaceful. Adam is wonderful to work. He answers any questions you have and always wants to assure our stay was a great one.

Tent camping @ Thunder Ridge
This was our first time using Hipcampers. We booked a tent campsite with Thunder Ridge campground and we absolutely loved it! Campsites were private, bathrooms were clean, and there was lots of things to do on the campground and around the area. Our host communicated well and provided all the information we needed.

RV Site 1
We really enjoyed staying on Adam site. He not only provided detailed instructions and videos on how to find the right site locations he met us upon arrival to answer any questions. It’s a beautiful narrow valley between hills at the edge of the National Forest. The sites were spacious with our site under a cluster of trees.

Site 1 (aka Bunny 2)
Adam was very helpful getting us directions for a late night arrival. Wood and campsite was clean and ready for us. The bathrooms and recreation room was in amazing condition and clean! Overall it was a very easy place to book, stay, and enjoy! We had only one minor nuance on Saturday night, which was neighbors with loads of hunting dogs howling and barking. It kept a few of us without earplugs up. But that's hunting season for you.

Great place
Great location to many activities. The screens were in great shape. I suggest bringing extra padding to sleep on, the mattresses are on the hard side. We love how spread out the sites are and that we aren't on top of other campers. The host is very responsive. Buy the campfire wood when you book, it's the best deal.
