A converted horse lorry and a cabin in a rural setting near Battle

Neddy’s Rest offers a couple of cute, cosy, and quirky places to lay your head within walking distance of an East Sussex vineyard. That’s not the only reason to stay here on the outskirts of Sedlescombe village. But it is a good one. Another is the gloriously rural setting among the horse paddocks of a family farm. Another is the fact that it’s just five minutes from seaside Hastings and historic Battle. Then, of course, let’s not forget Neddy’s Rest itself; it’s a lovingly converted horse lorry that provides compact, self-contained, self-catering accommodation for two.

Neddy’s Rest is the title place to stay on this family farm—but there’s a little timber cabin too, known as Vines and Pines for its location between the neighbouring vineyard and wood. Each of these adults-only boltholes is warmed by a log burner and kitted out with bedding, towels, and simple cooking facilities. Neddy’s Rest is the simplest—it’s off grid, with gas for hot water and the hob; and solar power for lights and charging your phone.

One of the biggest attractions here is the neighbours. Emphasis on the neigh. Particularly appropriate for Neddy’s Rest, are the horses, donkeys, and alpacas who graze in the paddocks around you. The residents of this smallholding, which also includes a pig, offer an ever-changing scene and soundscape that’s as rural as it comes—and pretty relaxing to be around too.

You might be content to spend a couple of days surrounded by this menagerie, sipping wine on the deck outside your accommodation and perhaps watching the stars from beside your campfire. You might want to pop over to the Carr Taylor vineyard next door—there’s a rural route there on footpaths—or you might be in the market for further exploration of the local countryside and coast. Whatever you come here for, Neddy’s Rest, which feels miles from anywhere but which is actually close to so much, is an excellent place to be based.

Our gorgeous Log Cabin, nestled on the edge of our paddock, between the vines of Carr Taylor vineyard and the Pine Wood. Fully immerse yourself in nature, horses pigs and alpacas. Shower in our whisky tub barrel, or nestle down to the warmth of our woodburner, or maybe eat alfresco by BBQ and watch the stars. Located near to Battle and Hastings.

A gorgeous location and so tranquil with only the animals for neighbours! Beautifully converted with a lot of attention to detail. I'm sad we only booked for one night, will definitely stay again next time we are in the area.

We have a converted horse lorry, with an internal deluxe shower room, organic chemical toilet, wood burner, double bed and kitchen with hot water and a gas stove. We have an amazing outdoor space located in Sedlescombe Battle between a vineyard and a pine forest, looking onto our grazing herd of ponies, horses, pigs and alpacas.
Nearby attractions

The Carr Taylor Vineyard is next door to the paddocks Neddy’s Rest is situated in. You can walk through the vines to the winery where there’s also a cafe and shop. Book in advance for a tour and tasting. Battle is five miles away and the edge of Hastings is even closer. In Battle, you can visit the 1066 Battlefield and Abbey, now managed by English Heritage. The town also has a small high street of mostly independent shops and eateries. In Hastings, there’s more 1066 history, and a charming old town with coffee shops, galleries and independent businesses alongside the usual attractions of a seaside town: fun fair rides, amusements and, of course, the beach itself.

Food and drink

A little welcome pack sets you up with everything you need for hot drinks and a light breakfast (pastries, milk, tea and coffee) but if you want more, there’s a Sainsbury’s supermarket just three miles from site in Hastings. You can walk from site to the Carr Taylor vineyard and tearoom (less than half a mile) or to the closest pub, The New Inn in Westfield (about a mile) for a menu of pub grub in recently refurnished surroundings. Alternatively, for more of a traditional country pub feel, walk (or drive) further to The Queen’s Head in Sedlescombe (three miles). There are plenty of places to eat, drink and stock up on supplies in Battle and Hastings too.
