Back-to-basics camping in beautiful Cornish countryside

The signpost to show you’ve arrived at this site in mid-Cornwall is a simple, hand painted one and the name it announces is pretty simple too: The Camping Field. It’s a fitting welcome to a campsite that’s as simple as it sounds – just five-acres of mowed grass with a trio of loos, taps and a few picnic benches scattered about.

With such simple facilities, this place won’t be for everyone but if you like to think of yourself as a “proper” camper or are self sufficient enough to just want somewhere to park up that’s bonafide, head for The Camping Field. With views across countryside to the nearby nature reserve at Helman Tor and a location that’s within easy reach of The Eden Project, you’re unlikely to be disappointed. In addition, owner Richard, will help you feel at home. This former dairy farmer and proper West Country-man runs a laid-back campsite where pretty much anything goes. Tents, campervans and caravans are all allowed as are campfires, kids and dogs.

This is an uncomplicated place where you can enjoy the simple pleasures of fresh air, plenty of space, campfires and starry nights – but it’s also well located. The Saints Way trail passes right by the site and there are walks up Helman Tor and in and around the nearby Luxulyan Valley. These are lovely local sights but it’s also incredibly conveniently positioned for visits to one of Cornwall’s biggest attractions, The Eden Project, whose stand-out biomes are just five miles away. For beaches, the closest are on the south coast, just eight miles and a 20-minute drive away at Par, for example, where dogs are welcome or Polkerris which is better for families. The north coast and its surf and seafood is well within reach too – Newquay and Padstow, both about a half-hour drive from here.

Freedom, walks on the Saintsway Pilgrim Pass through the campsite Plenty of cycle routes Helman tor walk 2 miles which you can walk through brealy common Famous luxulyan valley with viaduct Eden project Par beach allowed dogs on Polkeris beach with pub and restaurant on St austell beach

Great stay. Thank you

We were in a VW Transporter. Clean hot showers. Clean portaloo. Very quiet and secluded. Richard provided a free fire pit and logs at a reasonable price which was great. Richard was very knowledgeable about the local area and was a friendly host. We will be back.

Richard was an amazing host. Gave us ideas on where to go if we wanted to explore the area. Very friendly. Site was really quiet with beautiful views and rolling mist in the evenings. Portaloo was always kept clean. Grass pitch which was easy to put tent pegs in. Will be returning to explore Cornwall again when the weather is a bit better. Thank you Richard for a lovely stay 🙂

I had two nights on Richards camping field, it was a good clean site, he's a nice guy. Tight tiny lanes to get there in a van, I did enjoy it and I would camp there again. Thanks.

Just relax in these beautiful and peaceful surroundings, and wake up to the views of Helman Tor. Enjoy having campfires with your family and dog and then you can explore Luxulyan Valley and Brealy Common or go to the Eden Project. There are wonderful beaches nearby and a pub with a village shop too, Also a very good host to tell you whatever you want!
Nearby attractions

The Saints Way, a 30-mile footpath from the north coast to the south coast of Cornwall, passes The Camping Field and offers a great way to walk out into the countryside including to Helman Tor, a peak that’s visible from site, and part of a nature reserve managed by the Cornish Wildlife Trust. The Luxulyan Valley, to the south, is also worth exploring on foot and there are plenty of cycle routes in the area too. The Eden Project is just five miles from site with the town of St Austell a couple of miles further and Bodmin Moor 10 miles to the north. Dog-friendly Par beach and family-friendly Polkerris are a 20-minute drive south and the north coast at Newquay and Padstow is about half-an-hour away from here.

Food and drink

The closest place to The Camping Field for a shop or a pub is two miles away at Luxulyan where the village shop will do for supplies and The Kings Head pub offers food that’s recommended by your host. Another option is The Crown Inn at Lanlivery, three miles from site, where there’s a focus on good food and real ales or the Lanivet Inn, four miles to the north, on the edge of Bodmin Moor.
