Discover the most magical spots to pitch your tent or park your rig on your next Carnarvon Gorge adventure.
Multi-hued cliffs and forested banks provide a wild landscape for hikers at the Carnarvon Gorge, one of the highlights of the Carnarvon National Park. Hike beneath soaring sandstone cliffs along the Carnarvon Great Walk, take in the views along the Boolimba Bluff walk, or look out for wallabies and platypus along the Moss Garden walk. Ancient aboriginal artworks await discovery along Carnarvon Creek, or you can cool off with a swim in the Rock Pool. Camping is equally adventurous. Pitch your tent by natural pools, park your caravan in the heart of the gorge, or go glamping in a safari tent.
April through June is the best time for hiking, when the weather is cooler, and the gorge is lush from winter rainfall. From October through March, daytime temperatures can climb over 35°C and flooding is common—prepare for intense heat and rainfall if you choose to visit at this time. The Carnarvon Gorge Camping Area is open to campers during the Easter, June-July, and September-October Queensland school holidays only; the Big Bend camping area is open year-round.
