The best camping near Warby-Ovens National Park guide

Overview

About

Warby-Ovens National Park beckons adventurers with its spectacular riverine forests, majestic lookouts, and diverse wildlife. Venture into this natural playground to enjoy bushwalking, birdwatching, and cycling. Embrace the serenity of unpowered camping by the Ovens River, where the sounds of nature provide the perfect backdrop for a night under the stars.

Notable campgrounds

  • Wenhams Camp: An ideal base for exploring the park's walking tracks, offering individual sites with fireplaces and picnic tables.
  • Killawarra Forest Camp: Surrounded by Box-Ironbark woodland, this historic site offers a peaceful camping experience with basic facilities.
  • Dispersed Bush Camping: Along the Ovens River, enjoy sandy beaches and fishing spots, perfect for self-sufficient campers.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Plan ahead and arrive early, especially during peak seasons, to secure a spot at the popular Wenhams Camp or Killawarra Forest Camp.
  • For dispersed bush camping, be prepared to be flexible with your location as these sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Keep an eye on the weather forecast and park conditions to ensure accessibility, especially if you're planning to camp in more remote areas.
  • Explore nearby camping options if the park's campgrounds are full, ensuring you have a backup plan for your adventure.

When to go

The best time to visit Warby-Ovens National Park is during spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer offers a great escape along the Ovens River, but be prepared for higher temperatures. Winter provides stunning views of snow-capped peaks, ideal for brisk bushwalking.

Know before you go

  • Check for any park closures or reported issues before your visit, especially during extreme weather conditions.
  • Be aware of the park's conservation efforts; respect the natural habitat and wildlife by staying on designated tracks.
  • Mobile phone reception can be patchy; plan accordingly and inform someone of your itinerary.
  • Bring your own firewood and drinking water, as the campgrounds are unpowered and facilities are limited.
  • For safety, avoid camping under large trees and be cautious of wildlife, including snakes, especially in warmer months.
