Foot Forward Farm

2 sites · Lodging40 acres · Campbell River, BC
Nestle in to our walk-in private 'Pond Cabin' located on our 40 acre Regenerative mixed farm on beautiful Quadra Island. This idyllic 160 square foot, wood stove heated, cabin overlooks the largest pond on our property. The private site boast a glorious on-demand hot water outdoor shower and covered outdoor kitchen. Walk beside our grazing sheep, goats and chickens and visit our forest raised pigs on your way to the cabin. As Foot Forward is a Permaculture inspired Regenerative farm, no fossil fuels are used in pasture/grounds maintenance. Sheep and goats are used to graze all of the grass including the grass around the pond and cabin. There is a chance, depending on which paddock the sheep are working in, that you may have some 4 legged grounds keepers in and around your space. Contact us to book a farm tour and regenerative agriculture introduction. Farm fresh eggs, and a variety of other products from the farm are available including (assuming they aren't sold out) our famous sausages. Solar power provides you with all the lighting, shower-water pressure and technology charging you will need for your stay. There is no refrigeration onsite at the moment but access to a farm fridge can be arranged. Quadra Island was recently rated by Forbes Magazine as #5 on its most up and coming travel locations in the world. Perhapse it was beccaue of its natural beauty or the fact that it is a nearly mosquito free outdoor paradise. Quadra is the largest island in the Salish Sea. Endless recreational opportunities abound on the island. Hundreds of kilometres of hiking and mountain biking trails crisscross the island. Several guiding companies give provide access to the world class kayaking and scuba diving off of Quadra's shores. Do all that... or simply grab a book and curl up beside the pond or read a book in the hammock. *** Winter Comment*** The cabin is winterized. The stove is actually to hot for the size of the cabin. It requires a little practice timing your fire and opening windows to keep it at the best temperature. Since we are all 'Hip" here... it just adds to the adventure. :) Oh yeah... bring boots. :) About once a year a rainstorm intense enough to overflow the stream you need to cross to the cabin overflows. In that case it is a bit of challenge getting there.

Cabins near Campbell River guide

Overview

On Vancouver Island’s northeast coast, Campbell River is known for fishing and logging, but for outdoor adventurers, it’s a base camp to explore the island’s remote regions. Head for the hiking trails and campgrounds in vast Strathcona Provincial Park or several other BC parks, or go boating around the northern Gulf Islands. From Campbell River, you can taste your way through the farms and wineries of the Comox Valley, or learn about the area’s Indigenous communities. Campers have lots of options near Campbell River, including Miracle Beach (with a sandy beach on the ocean), Elk Falls, Loveland Bay, Morton Lake, and Strathcona Provincial Parks, as well as private RV parks and campgrounds with full services, from hookups to washrooms to wifi.

Where to go

Strathcona Provincial Park

In British Columbia’s oldest provincial park, you can go hiking, canoeing, fishing, climbing, backpacking, and camping in both frontcountry and wilderness areas. Most of the vehicle-accessible campgrounds, reservable through BC Parks Discover Camping site, are open from April or May through September or October. The park stays open year-round for winter camping in the backcountry.

Quadra and Cortes Islands

Accessible by ferry from Campbell River, these two islands offer more options for campers, including RV parks, backcountry sites, and marine access camping areas that you can reach only by water.

The Comox Valley

The towns of Courtenay, Comox, and Cumberland are located in the agricultural Comox Valley, where you can buy produce fresh from the farms and sample the fruits of the growing craft beer and local wine scene. Be sure to poke around Cumberland, a fun little town with cool cafés and shops.

When to go

and early fall. The weather can stay comfortable through October, although you can have more rain. From April through June, in the more volatile spring, there are mild days, too, as winter rains abate and flowers begin to bloom. Expect winter snow at higher elevations. Trails in Strathcona Provincial Park can be snow-covered from late October through June.

Know before you go

  • The most direct route from mainland British Columbia to Campbell River is to take BC Ferries’ car ferry from Horseshoe Bay (near Vancouver) to Nanaimo’s Departure Bay, then drive 90 minutes north to Campbell River. • An alternate scenic route between Vancouver and Campbell River takes you through BC’s Sunshine Coast, with three ferry hops that eventually bring you to Comox on Vancouver Island.
  • Pick up supplies in Campbell River, the largest commercial center in this part of Vancouver Island, if you’re heading for Strathcona Provincial Park, for Quadra or Cortes Islands, or for any of the north island’s farther-flung communities.
