Overview

About

Just over an hour and a half’s drive from Dauphin, Asessippi Provincial Park is set on the Lake of the Prairie where the valleys of the Shell River and Assiniboine River meet. The park offers all of the best beach activities: fishing (perch, walleye, and northern pike), boating, and swimming. Landlubbers will find hiking trails, minigolf, a horseshoe pit, and those visiting with a group can hit the baseball diamond. For overnight visits, you can tent camp, bring an RV, or elevate the experience and enjoy yurts for a fun glamping adventure.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Reservations need to be made online via Manitoba Parks, in person at the Winnipeg office, or by phone.
  2. Campground reservations open at the beginning of April for yurts and in mid-April for regular (unserviced and power) sites.
  3. Seasonal campsites allow lottery-based extended bookings. If you want to try for one of those, you need to get your application in before the February cutoff.

When to go

The camping season stretches from mid-May until mid-September. Earlier in the season, you are more likely to run into cooler temperatures, so make sure you bring warm clothes, especially if you are tenting. Later in the summer, the lake will be a bit warmer...if you are hoping to swim you may want to keep that in mind. And of course, weekends (especially long holiday weekends) will be more crowded than during the week. If you are hoping to camp during peak season, make a reservation as far ahead as possible.

Know before you go

  • To enter any Manitoba provincial park, you need to buy a parks permit, which is available on a seasonal/annual basis, or for the length of your stay.
  • Barrier-free campsites come with level compacted soil surfaces and a modified picnic bench. They’re a short distance from accessible bathrooms.
  • Yurts, group camping, power sites and unserviced sites are available. Rates vary by site type.
