The best camping near Blackstrap Provincial Park guide

Overview

About

Sure, Blackstrap has beautiful trails, backcountry camping, swimming, and all the other water activities you could desire, but this park also serves up a whole heap of other attractions that make it a major vacation destination. In summer, there are drive-in movies, the Aquatic Adventures Inflatable Waterpark, a beach cafe, and a nighttime geo-caching trail. Also a popular day-use park with a boat launch, this is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a party vibe, though it is possible to find quieter spots in the park (especially if you go for the walk-in campsites).

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for families: Kevin Misfeldt Campground offers the most amenities.
  • Best for hikers: Hazelnut Grove Campground is located next to the park’s hiking trails.
  • Best for classic park views: Sunset Ridge Campground serves up sweeping vistas.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. This park is super popular with locals, especially on weekends and holidays, owing to its proximity to Saskatoon. Although you may be able to snag a last-minute campsite in summer due to a cancellation or a no-show, you are well-advised to book a spot in advance using the Parks Saskatchewan online booking system or by calling their online booking line.
  2. Book as far in advance of your trip as possible—the system usually opens early in the year.

When to go

Summer (mid-June through September) is the best time to experience the many delights of Blackstrap Provincial Park, but visiting outside of those times will help you avoid the crowds, as the park can serve as party central for folks visiting from the city. If you want a quiet stay, avoid weekends and Canadian holidays. Visiting in fall can be really pretty, and you may luck out with fine weather well into October.

Know before you go

  • Bears are known to frequent the park so be sure to keep food or any scented attractants secured.
  • Blackstrap Provincial Park allows for longer stays and seasonal camping, so expect to see families and groups set up for the summer.
  • You’ll need to buy a park vehicle permit to access the park and have this displayed in your vehicle at all times.
  • Pack extra-strength bug spray! Mosquitoes and blackflies can be awful in the prairies in the summer.
  • Even on the warmest of days, temperatures can drop significantly on the prairies at night so be sure to pack warm items for the evenings.
