Glamping pod holidays in the UK guide

Overview

Whether you’re hiking in England’s national parks, exploring the lochs and Munros of the Scottish Highlands, or holidaying in the Welsh countryside—the United Kingdom is brimming with idyllic natural landscapes perfect for glamping pods. For campers who want a back-to-nature experience without getting their wellies too muddy, renting a glamping pod is the perfect compromise.

These compact cabins come in all shapes and sizes, from cute wooden domes to luxury lodges, and are built from natural materials like wood while incorporating elements of eco-design, perhaps like sheep's wool insulation. They're often described as an upside-down-boat-type-shape with a tall, wide, curving form that isn't too dissimilar from the underside of a sea-going vessel. Like a giant armadillo, they have a hard outer-shell and arching shape to keep you dry and ensure water always runs off. The idea, put simply, is to offer a shape relatively similar to a tent, but far larger and far more weather resistant.

Glamping pods are also self-contained and typically fully furnished, often with heating, air-conditioning, and comfy beds to keep you cosy through all four seasons (no soggy sleeping mats here!). You may find king-sized beds, provided towels, en-suite bathrooms, hot tubs, and miniature kitchens in luxury models, while more basic pod camping sites allow you to rent the pod without much else provided. Best of all, you’ll find glampsites springing up close to many of the UK’s most popular hiking and camping destinations, from the Cairngorms National Park to the Lake District to the coast of Cornwall.

The Benefits of Glamping in a Pod

As with all glamping, the main benefit of staying in a pod is that it cuts out the faff of a regular camping break. You don't need to own or transport any camping equipment, and with no need to pitch your tent, you can spend more time enjoying your holiday and exploring the local area.

Even better, pods are a very resilient glamping structure. So while summery bell tents and family-sized yurts are excellent in the hight of the hotter months, it's pods that offer real warmth and comfort all year-round. Expect great insulation in winter and look out for electrical heating, gas heating, or even under-floor heating in really luxurious models.

They are also wonderfully compact while still being able to sleep a family of four or five. You'll also discover some have neat little kitchen areas and en-suite bathrooms too. Of course, not every pod is the same and every glamping site does things a bit differently. It's also true that pods may slightly lack the romance of something like a shepherd's hut or the excitement of a treehouse, but for a reasonable price and a great weather-proof option, pods are our pick every time.

Five Reasons We Love Glamping Pods

  • There's something undeniably snug about living like a hobbit.
  • Cosy and warm, pods offer great insurance against the weather all year-round.
  • There's no need to buy or bring a tent!
  • Pods are relatively cheap compared to many other year-round glamping options.
  • These sturdy structures allow for extras like electricity and kitchen facilities.
