Frequently asked questions

  • How does Hipcamp work?

Hipcamp is an online booking platform where visitors find unique places to stay on private land, from cabins and yurts, to campsites and RV spots. Landowners earn extra income by hosting guests for overnight stays, and all you need is a flat piece of land and access to the great outdoors to start earning.

Starting a listing is completely free and it only takes minutes from start to finish. You set your own rules, pricing, and offerings, with the ability to block important dates and build your ideal hosting schedule so you only host guests when you want. Hosts can set up direct deposit or PayPal to automatically receive earnings every week.

  • Is my place right for Hipcamp?

Hipcamp properties range from one acre to thousands, from raw land to developed campgrounds, from glamping tents to luxury treehouses. The important thing is that you connect your guests with nature. If you’re not sure whether your land is suitable, you can check our listing guidelines.

  • What about insurance?

We’ve got you covered. In the rare event of Hipcamper injury, our insurance protects Hosts for up to $1 million for general liability claims per occurrence on every booking.

  • How much can I earn?

How much you earn can depend on your location, setting, and site/accommodation type. We offer customized pricing suggestions based on similar successful properties in your area. This can range from $35 per night for a basic campsite to over $300 per night for a luxury cabin or treehouse. Within the first 8 months of partnering with us, many Hipcamp Hosts have earned over $20,000, often expanding their businesses as a result.

  • How much will it cost?

It’s completely free to list your property on Hipcamp. Once you start hosting, Hipcamp takes a 10% commission on your earnings, meaning you keep 90%.

    Here’s where the commission goes:

    • A 3% processing fee that goes directly to Stripe, our secure payment processor.
    • Email and social media marketing to our growing community of over 7 million Hipcampers.
    • Protection up to $1M under our complimentary insurance policy. Learn more about our insurance coverage here.
    • 7 day/week customer support from Guides located in the USA.
    • A hands-on Host Success Specialist who can help you optimize your Hipcamp experience and reach your goals.
  • How long does it take to set up?

Starting a listing is quick, free, and easy. You can set up your listing and start taking bookings in as little as 15 minutes. Simply click “Get started” at the top of this page.

  • Do I need to provide toilets?

All structures and campsites listed on Hipcamp must have access to a toilet, whether provided by the Host or the guest. This ensures that Hipcampers dispose of human waste in a way that’s safe for the environment and local community. If you’re able to provide a toilet, it must be onsite with unrestricted access to guests. (Hosts offering a sleeping structure must provide a contracted portable toilet, a rustic toilet, or an advanced toilet; basic transportable camp toilets are not allowed.) If you're not able to provide a toilet onsite, guests must bring their own camp toilet, including self-contained RVs.

  • What if I have an issue with a guest?

We make every effort to protect you against bad experiences before they happen. Here’s how:

    • Each Hipcamper agrees during checkout that they reviewed the rules and guidelines you’ve set up. We recommend you set clear and concise rules to help Hipcampers easily keep them in mind.
    • One of the core values of Hipcamp is to Leave it Better, and all of our community members are expected to uphold that value. Hipcampers are expected to abide by the Hipcamper Standards.
    • If a Hipcamper is flagged within the community for behaving poorly, they will be given clear feedback on the situation. If necessary, they will be banned from using Hipcamp in the future.

Luckily, we’re proud to say that we’ve had very few instances of bad Hipcamper behavior. In fact, many Hosts often complement how respectful Hipcampers are to their land.

  • What if I host somewhere else?

Hipcamp makes it easy to sync your calendar with other hosting platforms so you can get more bookings with no added stress. We support calendar integration with Airbnb, VRBO, HomeAway, Google Calendar, and iCal, so you don’t need to worry about double bookings.

  • Do you sync with my reservation software?

Yes. Hipcamp integrates with a range of property management systems (PMSs), including those used by the world’s biggest campground groups. We integrate with ResNexus, Roverpass, Newbook, RMS, Bedful, and more. If you’re unsure whether your reservation software integrates with Hipcamp, please schedule a call with us.

  • I’m already fully booked on another site - why should I list with Hipcamp?

57% of bookings on Hipcamp are for mid-week and off-peak stays, so even if you have a successful listing elsewhere, Hipcamp still helps you grow. Hosts also love our low fees, US-based support team, and the fact that we bring the right guests for you. Since it’s free to list, why not try it now and see why Hosts love Hipcamp for yourself?

  • What does Hipcamp expect from me as a Host?

Our Hipcamp Host Standards exist to set expectations and serve as guidance for our Host community. All Hosts should adhere to these standards around not just providing a positive Hipcamper experience, but also being a thoughtful neighbor, a responsible citizen, and an environmental steward.

As part of our Host Standards, we expect that Hipcamp Hosts also adhere to all regulations that apply to their hosting activity. Read more about understanding local regulations regarding hosting campers here.

Hipcamp has proven to be a sure-fire source of extra income for us, and we have enjoyed meeting the quality people that keep arriving.
