Situated between England and Wales, with the River of Wye separating the two regions, this stunning landscape has inspired authors like Tolkien and Rowling and artists like Joseph Farington. Perhaps it will be the spark for your own great novel or painting? Or just a place to kick back beneath the stars with a good campfire, a good book and a few added glamping comforts.

Glamping in Forest of Dean guide

Overview

Things to do in the Forest of Dean

Outdoor lovers will get lost in the Forest of Dean and will love every minute of doing so. This 27,000 acre stretch of remarkable, historic land is packed with things to do and activities to enjoy, from days out walking and cycling to kayaking, museums, caving and even a steam railway.

Explore the Clearwell Caves

Have an underground adventure in the Clearwell Caves, located in Coleford, a natural cave system that has been mined for its ochre pigments and iron ore for over 4,500 years. These caves tell plenty of stories, showing a new side to the Forest of Dean that you won't get above the ground. Come see the natural wonder that has been featured in plenty of films and TV shows, from Doctor Who to The Chronicles of Narnia.

Visit the Dean Forest Railway

Enjoy an authentic steam train ride on the Dean Forest Railway, a four-and-a-half-mile line that provides stunning views of woodland and countryside. You'll get to experience the Dean Forest in all its glory from out of the train window, with its stops encompassing the likes of the Lydney Harbour and its views across the Severn, along with various scenic walking routes.

Admire the view from Symonds Yat Rock

If you're after the perfect photo to encapsulate the magic of your time in the Forest of Dean, there's no better spot than the internationally famous Symonds Yat Rock. This viewpoint provides the perfect place to admire your surroundings, with it also being notable as one of the best places in the UK to watch Peregrine Falcons, making it an ideal day out for bird watchers or those who simply love a good view.

Get some exercise

As you'd expect from its sprawling hills, rolling forest and glorious woodland stretching 27,000 acres, there are plenty of opportunities to get some exercise in the Forest of Dean. We're not talking about your boring everyday exercise, though; think cycling routes through the wilderness, watersports in the River Wye, or even just long walks with your loved ones through miles of greenery.

The Wye welcomes canoeing and kayaking, with its slow waters making it one of the most popular spots for beginners in the region. However, the more experienced will appreciate the rapids of Symonds Yat, a more exciting option for those who are accustomed to the water – and not falling in it! Symonds Yat Rock also features plenty of walking and cycling trails running to and from it, with the region well signposted to always keep you headed in the right direction. Or, if you're with the kids, why not make your way to Puzzlewood, a wonderful walking day out that's set in a maze of "otherworldly" woodland.
