We are a family run farm situated in the beautiful Frome valley. The farm has a range of interests from the traditional Jersey milking cows to a community of workshops used by local craftsmen. Ours is a small family run camp site with the River Frome on one side, next to the medieval buildings of Stowford Farm. The river is suitable for fishing, boating, swimming and paddling. For those who enjoy more rural pleasures, 200 metres from the campsite Farleigh Hungerford boasts the only river swimming club in the country, and you can become an instant member for a very small fee.

Hide in the Downs is a unique hideaway that prides itself on offering small luxuries whilst being immersed in nature. Both our huts have outdoor bathing to watch the night stars (and listening to the many owls) and our bell tents have beautifully presented private bathing facilities. Located in the heart of the North Downs AONB, we are in arguably the remotest part of Kent with no light pollution or noise. Our sites are positioned at each corner of our property (12 acres) and total privacy is guaranteed. We have a footpath running through the heart of the wild meadow that leads into a beautiful valley taking you to the village of Doddington (30 mins) where there is a terrific pub. Or a longer walk (1.5 hours) in the opposite direction to the village of Stalisfield where The Plough pub always serves the most delicious food. Many of our guests enjoy day trips to Faversham and Whistable where they can collect some fresh fish for the BBQ, you will also find an award winning butcher in Doddington. Hosted by Tom and Charlotte, who take hosting and customer experience very seriously. A lifelong dream of running a hotel as a child, being front of house is when Charlotte is in her element and will go far and beyond to ensure you have a great stay. Tom is on hand to help with any practicalities you may need assistance with. We are passionate about wildlife and believe in leaving nature alone, you will not find a manicured setting at Hide in The Downs, instead the meadow has been left to its own, which only contributes to your hidden experience. Whoever coined "blue and green should never be seen" was blind to nature, therefore you can expect these aesthetics to be seen across all our sites. The bell tents are comfortably furnished (one double and one kingsize) and come with a DVD player and lots of movies to choose from, an oven, a gas bbq and a beautifully presented private bathroom in a converted horse trailer. Whilst the two cosy shepherd's huts boast elegant decor and luxuries required to enjoy your home comforts.

There's plenty of space around the site for traditional outdoor activities, with a rope swing and stepping stones over the shallow river and a bridge that's perfect for playing Pooh Sticks. In the surrounding area there are animal parks and nature reserves to walk around, or to head back further in time, you could take one of the trails through ancient Sherwood Forest, around quarter of an hour's drive away. Guest facilities on site centre around the Cave Bar, a cool little space built into an exposure of 500-million-year-old sandstone, plus an outdoor terrace for sipping drinks out in the sunshine. Other amenities include a washing-up area and bathrooms with plentiful hot showers, toilets and baby changing facilities. Not far from central Milton Keynes you’ll find parks and nature reserves ideal for hiking and biking, while further out still you’ll find historic landmarks, including the University of Oxford, and Areas of Natural Beauty begging to be explored. Classic British holiday parks offer an ideal base for caravan tours, while tent-pitchers and pod-dwellers can head deep into the countryside with plenty of privately-run campsites and public campgrounds to choose from.

Where to go

Milton Keynes Countryside

Enclosed by lush valleys, forest reserves, and vast parkland, you don’t need to travel far outside of Milton Keynes to experience the Great British Outdoors. Hunker down by the tranquil lakes of Emberton Country Park, get back to camping basics at one of the nearby working farms, or experience classic British touring at one of the region’s holiday parks.

Aylesbury Vale

Reaching out from Milton Keynes towards Oxford in the west and the Chilterns in the south, this Buckinghamshire valley region is best known for its historic villages, sprawling fields, and secluded countryside campsites. Hipcampers with kids shouldn’t miss a day trip to Aylesbury, home of the Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery.

Oxford

Since you’re only an hour away by road, why not drop by the historic university city for a punt on the Isis and pint in a pretty beer garden? There are some good campsites just outside of town too, including glamping and farm camping, so perhaps you could be tempted to stay for another pint!

Chiltern Hills AONB

There are few sights more quintessentially English than that of the undulating Chilterns, and it’s a sight best soaked up on a walk, cycle, or horse ride along the many nature trails that stretch between the region’s royal mansions. Plus, the area is about 45 minutes away from Milton Keynes, Oxford, and London, making it a great stopover spot.

The Cotswolds AONB

One of Britain’s greatest outdoor attractions, the idyllic Cotswolds is made up of picturesque villages, historic landmarks, and miles and miles of unspoilt nature. About a 90-minute drive from Milton Keynes, the region is a great option for a weekend of biking, hiking, or just taking it easy far away from the city.

When to go

Spring and summer are the most popular times for camping here, though be aware that the Great British Weather cannot be foretold, so prepare for pouring rain in summer and bright sun (and rain) in winter. Don’t be put off by the wet weather—if you’re fine with a little mud, there’s a lot to be enjoyed about a Buckinghamshire winter, including stunning snow scatterings, hearty pub lunches, and quieter campsites.
