Shepherds Hut Hideaway in Devon!

2 units · Glamping4 acres · Bude, England
Welcome to Livit Hideaway- a hidden gem in the Devon countryside. Stay in one of our two beautiful hand crafted Shepherds huts tucked away in our peaceful small holding and hobby vineyard. Surrounded by nature you can truly unwind in the wood fired hot tub as you admire the far reaching views. Livit Hideaway is a smallholding of around 3.75 acres where we grow 200 vines for wine production, we make cider from our apples and grow our own vegetables and fruit produce. It's the ideal place to relax and really switch off. We are perfectly placed half way between Bideford and Bude, if you love the beach, then just 25 minutes in either direction you will find some of the best in the South West. We recently acquired this already established site where the previous owners ran a thriving holiday business and shared their wonderful space with guests over the last 4 years. They have passed the baton to us and we are thrilled to take over and continue to create unique new experiences for guests who visit. We run another glamping business close by called Livit Adventures- it's a family friendly site with lots of activities on offer during the summer season. We purchased this new site so we could establish a family home for ourselves as well as continue our passion for the holiday accommodation business. We hope you love it as much as we do. Here at Livit Hideaway we have two hand crafted Shepherds huts. Each hut has its own unique setting within our smallholding. The huts have wood fired hot tubs, mains electric and mains water supply, a lovely shower room with loo, washbasin and shower. We provide all bedding and towels so you don't have to bring your own. There is a cosy sitting/dining area inside by the fully equipped kitchen which includes a butler sink, oven, hob, fridge, kettle, toaster, glasses, crockery and cutlery. Each outside area includes a fire pit with a bbq grill and seating for dining and relaxing. Everything you really need for you country escape.

We have tried to think of everything to make life easy for you- including a very well equipped kitchen, eco-friendly toiletries, books to read, magazines and guide books so all you need to do is pack your bags. We really care about the environment and hope you do too. We commit to local and organic wherever possible, only use environmentally friendly cleaning products and toiletries. We look after our 6 acres with non invasive methods and grow organically. You will find everything you need here, including a lovely, light open plan living area with dining table, well equipped kitchen, comfy sofa, wood burning stove (generous amount of wood and kindling provided), with lovely views over the surrounding fields through the French windows. There is a small covered terrace outside with table and chairs to sit and enjoy your food, a coffee or something a little stronger...... we can also lend you a firepit or bucket BBQ and can sell you logs or local charcoal. You will look out over your own garden area and onto the fields beyond. The bathroom has a large shower and freestanding bath. The large bedroom has a very comfy double bed with organic linen, duck and goose down pillows and a Devon wool duvet. Hairdryer, towels and eco friendly toiletries are provided. We are just a few minutes walk from one of the oldest and best pubs in Devon - The Church House Inn, Rattery, with excellent local food and drink. We’re happy to accept babies under 1. Regrettably, the property is not suitable for older children. You might choose to join us for a woodfired cookery class or crafting course at The Bakehouse at Mill Cross Retreats. You can see this information on our website. We provide a selection of maps and local guide books and Devon Life magazines for you to peruse to see what’s on. We’re also on hand to give advice, tips on where to go and what to do. We have a very comprehensive online guidebook linked to our website which we’ll share with you when your booking is confirmed. The cottage has its own private woodfired hot tub. Unlike electric hot tubs, this uses fresh water and no chemicals-so is a real treat under the stars or on a lazy afternoon. We will light it and bring it up to temperature for you. This requires 24 hours notice and is available most of the time provided we are here! The hot tub is £50 for two consecutive days' uses, payable in cash on arrival. It can only be used for two consecutive days before it needs to be drained and cleaned. The hot tub is 1.8m diameter and has a fibreglass liner, steps up and in integral woodburner-a really unique experience. If you book ahead of your visit, you can change your mind at zero cost as long as we have 12 hours notice. Please check the weather immediately prior to your stay and let us know if you’d like to go ahead or not! 1 (occasionally 2) well behaved small/medium dog/s (preferably crate trained) welcome strictly by prior arrangement at an additional charge of £45 (£50 for two) per stay. Dogs are not allowed on the sofa or in the bedroom. Please do not add your dog/s to your booking-contact Emma please as we don’t take bookings with dogs until you have seen and agreed to our Ts and Cs. Due to our lovely soft furnishings, we cannot take large/shaggy dogs. Please note, any damage caused by your dog will be charged to you. We can provide safe bike storage if you would like to take advantage of the cycle routes. We keep free-range chickens, non free-range goats and have a Working Cocker spaniel, Juno and a very friendly barn cat, Mrs Pickles. You are welcome to explore our space and sit in our meadow and enjoy the views with a glass of wine. We also have the very lovely Jenny Wren, a unique and romantic shepherds hut with a woodland hot tub. Each of our lovely properties is totally private and not overlooked.

Shepherd's huts with hot tubs near Torquay guide

Overview

Camping in Torquay puts you at the heart of the action on the English Riviera. With its own microclimate and long sunshine hours, this seaside resort town is a top tourist attraction on England’s south coast. A trio of award-winning beaches (Babbacombe, Oddicombe and Tore Abbey Sands), wildlife-rich woodlands, Stone Age caves, and clifftop trails are all within easy reach of town, providing thrills for outdoor-loving families and lone travellers alike. Beyond the bay, several protected landscapes reveal the beauty of rural England, and offer all sorts of opportunities for sleeping beneath the stars.

Things to Do in Torquay

It’s the seaside that’s been bringing holidaymakers to Torquay and the English Riviera for centuries and that’s where you’ll find much of the action. Buy a bucket and spade and head for the beach, try your luck at the amusements, play crazy golf or ride the English Riviera Wheel – Torquay’s answer to the London Eye. At Brixham you can watch the fishing boats land their catch and all along the coast you can sample the Devon crab that the area is famous for. You can have a go at crabbing from the quay, jump aboard a local ferry to head from town to town or head out to sea on a kayaking or paddleboarding trip. Torquay’s most-famous daughter, Agatha Christie, is celebrated at the Torquay Museum and on a literary trail of the area. Her former holiday home, Greenway House, near Brixham is open to the public too.

If you’re on a family camping holiday in Torquay, there are plenty of attractions with an appeal for all ages from Kents Cavern Stone Age caves to Paignton Zoo to and Babbacombe Model Village, with the Dartmouth Steam Railway offering a scenic way to get around. On a rainy day, why not head to a show at Babbacombe Theatre? While, to enjoy the natural highlights of the area when the sun is out, you can stride out on the South West Coast Path and perhaps visit Berry Head National Nature Reserve, south of Brixham, for wildlife and fantastic sea views.

Where to go

Torbay, or the English Riviera

Encompassing Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham, this 22-mile (35-kilometre) coastal stretch (known as Torbay or Tor Bay) holds status as an UNESCO Global Geopark, and has long drawn holidaymakers to England’s scenic south. Seaside holiday parks and caravan sites are ideal for Hipcamper families, while inland farms and private camps provide no-frills options for outdoor adventure.

Blackdown Hills and East Devon AONBs

An hour’s drive northeast of Torquay on the Devon-Somerset border, these adjoining Areas of Natural Beauty boast waterways, rolling hills, woodlands, and coastline, making the region a destination for any rambler, rider, or watersports fan. Overnight options range from working farms to glamping pods, all ensuring an intimate glimpse of rural England.

South Devon AONB

This vast protected landscape sprawls from the borders of Brixham across to Bovisand near Plymouth. Miles of coastline and estuaries are ideal for boat adventure, while nature reserves and walking routes, including a portion of the South West Coast Path, draw ramblers, riders, and wildlife watchers. Caravan and camping sites can be found across the area.

Dartmoor National Park

One of England’s most iconic landscapes, this enormous park is best known for its quiet and secluded moorlands, deep valleys, and dense woodland. Climbing routes, canoe courses, and riding stables provide plenty of thrills, while those in search of calm can explore a vast network of walking trails. Wild camping is permitted in some areas, though rules are strict. Private campgrounds can be found across the park.

When to go

Torquay is extremely busy during summer and school holidays, so if you’re keen to beat the crowds—and don’t mind swapping seaside sunbathing for dramatic cliff walks—consider an off-season visit.

Know before you go

  • The direct train from London to Torquay takes around three hours.
  • The region is relatively well connected by bus, but if you’re headed for a remote spot it can be useful to have your own vehicle.
  • Walk-ins are usually not accepted, especially at holiday parks, so book your pitch in advance.
  • Mountain Warehouse and Trespass both sell camping supplies in Torquay’s town centre.
  • The English Riviera Visitor Information Centre can be found on Torquay Harbour.
