Back to basics, summer-only camping in a farmer’s field in Wiltshire

Pull in, park up and pitch your tent at Pop Up Outwest and you have the makings of a great stay in Wiltshire. Sounds simple doesn’t it? And indeed it is. This is a summer-only campsite in a farmer’s field. It’s somewhere to get away from it all and enjoy the great outdoors with walks straight from the site, wildlife all around and one of Wiltshire’s white horses in view. Ponder its origins as you watch the kids run free in the field, as you walk your dog around its edges or as you stoke the campfire at sunset. This is laid-back, easy going camping that’s as wild as you’d want it to be.

The almost-wild-camping vibe is cushioned by the provision of portaloos, drinking water taps and bins for rubbish and recycling. There’s also a lovely host, Mel, who’ll either welcome you on arrival or check in with you in the evening. She can hire you an off-ground fire pit and sell you logs for your stay. But that’s just about all you’ll find on this eight-acre site. It feels just right for the unspoilt location which is not too near to anything but not so far away from Wiltshire’s big sights either.

Longleat Safari Park is 13 miles away, Stonehenge is 19 miles to the east and Bath, over the county border in Somerset, is even closer than that. But there are other more local attractions if you want a more restful stay. Take a walk up to the Westbury White Horse that’s just about visible from the camping field, take a mooch around nearby riverside Trowbridge or simply explore neighbouring Clanger Woods.

Lovely and quiet

Was worried as first time using hipcamps, but site lovely and quiet, clean ,plenty of room between campers . There were two portable toilets although I have no idea what they were like as we bring our own ,but there is a disposal point, fresh water tap x2 and bins on site. Mel was very prompt in bringing round our hired fire pit and logs. We will definitely be returning here thank you .

Very peaceful and spacious! Love it

Soo much space!! We had very pecefull and relaxing time with lots of space around us which was great for us and a dogs. Very chilled place, clean toilets, if you looking for peace and queit that is the place for you! Would definietely come back!

Perfect :D

Really lovely quiet site, nice flat ground with clean portaloos, water points and bins. Cows next door were sweet and rabbits came out at dusk 🐰 Exactly what we were after and Mel was very nice and helpful. Nearby places we recommend visiting are Warminster, Trowbridge Museum and the White Horse (especially at sunset).

Quiet camping next to cows !

We had a wonderful time, even though it was raining most of it. Quiet, spacious campsite with lots to explore in walking and driving distance. Mel is really accommodating and we had a great communication from beginning to end. Can recommend to get some fresh eggs from her farm. Will definitely come again!

Pop-up Outwest is a quiet, secluded site on a 200-acre organic free-range family farm in the gorgeous Wiltshire countryside just five minutes’ drive from the town of Trowbridge. It's a great place to escape the hustle and bustle and to embrace the beauty of the countryside. There's plenty of space to spread out and a laid-back atmosphere on site. It's surrounded by woodlands and there are scenic footpaths leading from the farm. We're not far from from the famous Westbury Whitehorse – and you can even catch a glimpse of it from our nearby fields. Dogs are welcome here. Open fires in fire pits and BBQs are also allowed, we just ask they remain raised off the ground. We have portable toilets and water points, along with W.C disposal. Please note, there are no showers here.

Nearby attractions

You can walk on a public footpath across the neighbouring field and over a stile into Clanger Woods – or head a mile or so down the road to Dunge to join the White Horse Trail. It’s a long walk to the Westbury White Horse – but you can get there in the car in less than 10 minutes to see the chalk outline up close, admire the view and discover the site of Bratton Camp, Iron Age hillfort. The village of Bratton is a good place to set off from if you want a shorter walk and has a pub for refreshments after the climb up and back. For more of Wiltshire’s ancient sites, Avebury henge (20 miles) and Stonehenge (19 miles) and all the related barrows and earthworks are close enough for a visit. Longleat Safari Park is 13 miles from the campsite. Wiltshire’s county town of Trowbridge is five miles away and the smaller market town of Westbury is about the same distance. Bath, with its elegant Georgian architecture, Roman baths and Jane Austen connections, is 16 miles away.

Food and drink

The closest convenience store is the Co-op, about two miles from site towards Trowbridge. The town offers plenty more options for shopping for your own food – including a large Tesco supermarket. There’s a market in town every Wednesday and plenty of independent shops and eateries as well. For a meal out, The Duke Inn in Bratton (three miles) is the closest recommended option, followed by The Longs at Steeple Ashton (four miles) which is dog friendly. The Milk Churn on the edge of Melksham is also recommended and is dog friendly with a sunny beer garden.
