Pods on a farm overlooking Woolacombe Bay in Devon

The two glamping pods at Poole Farm are five minutes from the golden sands of Woolacombe beach, 10 minutes from Croyde, and 15 minutes from Saunton Sands. Need we say more to persuade you to book your stay? Proximity to three of the best beaches in the UK is certainly the big seller here but there are other things to recommend these glamping pods too. For starters there’s the sea view that comes with this location high on the hill above Woolacombe and then there’s the pods themselves. These are charming boltholes for two providing everything you need for a self-catering stay that’s well connected to the outdoors.

What’s particularly lovely in this location is that this is a bijou little site on a still-working Devon farm. While caravan parks and holiday sites are plentiful round these parts, this is a small enterprise built and run by local farmer, John, whose 120 acres are grazed by ruby red Devon cattle. And he’s made rather a good job of it. The pods have French doors that face the bay and the setting sun, which means you can enjoy the view whether you’re outside cooking a barbecue or inside having breakfast in bed. The pod is a single space combining sitting room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom – with an ensuite shower and loo at the back. It’s small but pretty perfectly formed under its curved timber-clad roof. You have power, lights and running water, an oven, a kettle and fridge. There’s even a TV – handy in poor weather but, with what’s outside the window, you may never turn it on.

These pods are perfect as bases from which to explore North Devon’s beaches and coast. Woolacombe is just over a mile away with three miles of sand and surf to play with. Just over the headland to the south is Croyde and beyond that is Saunton Sands with three more miles of beach. All this is connected by the South West Coast Path so whether it’s surfing, sunbathing or walking that you want to visit North Devon for, it’s all within easy reach. Likewise Exmoor National Park, which is only five miles away.

We had such an amazing stay in the pod. It was spotlessly clean, cosy, and the view was amazing! The bathroom was much bigger than expected with an amazing shower and the bed was super comfy. There was lots of attention to detail which was much appreciated and made our stay even better! We ended up staying 2 extra nights, and John was happy to arrange this with us even during our stay. There was ample parking for our car and the location has a great view of the sea. We would definitely return to the pod as it was such a relaxing and homely place to stay! :)

Welcome to Poole Farm Pods! We are located on a family run cattle farm where you can enjoy amazing views of Woolacombe all the way to Hartland Point. On a clear day look out and see if you can see the lovely Lundy Island. Poole Farm Pods are situated on a 120 acre working farm. Look out for the North Devon Cattle which are Ruby Red in colour grazing in the fields. We also have pet sheep and a Collie sheepdog please leave her be as she is always keen to work. Here at Poole Farm Pods our two pods Ruby 1 and Ruby 2 are named after the our herd of cattle. We have two pods available for weekday or long weekend bookings. The farmer has been hard at work building the pods over spring 2022 and are excited to welcome guests for a unique stay. Both pods have a fitted kitchen, en-suite bathroom with an electric shower and heated towel rail . Towels are supplied as is hand wash and shampoo . The pods have a double bed, bistro table and chairs, a sofa and a tv for your cozy nights in. There is also heating and electricity within the pods. If you fancy watching the sunset please take a pew on the handmade picnic table and make use of the BBQ if you wish. Each pod has parking for two vehicles within a short walk of the pods (approx 30/40 yards). A romantic getaway, a staycation with your best friend or a wholesome retreat by yourself we welcome you all to Poole Farm Pods. Poole Lane is a narrow country lane. Please be considerate to the local residents and drive carefully. The pods are accessed via a gravel driveway. Please note the path to the pods is slightly inclined. We are sorry there is no wheelchair access as there is a step up to the pods. We are WI-FI free bring a board game or a good book. Most mobile networks get 4G coverage. We do not as yet have electric vehicle chargers but are hoping to fit them later this year. You are welcome to bring bikes although there is no dedicated storage for them. There are no laundry services however there is a nearby launderette in Braunton. Nearby attractions

Poole Farm is just up the road from Woolacombe at the top of Woolacombe beach. You can sign up for surf lessons or hire equipment from Woolacombe Surf Centre who also run coasteering and kayaking adventures on the North Devon Coast. There’s more of that at Croyde (six miles) and Saunton Sands (eight miles). Barricane beach is a smaller beach at the north of Woolacombe, which is great for shell collecting and a lovely (and popular) place to watch the sunset. If you tire of the sand, head for Lee (two miles away) where it’s more rocky and great for rockpooling. Woolacombe Riding Stables offer horse riding for all abilities from their stables just a mile down the road. The village of Mortehoe, a similar distance from the farm, is home to the Mortehoe Heritage Centre, a small museum about local history. From the pods, on a clear day, you can see Lundy Island, a breeding ground for puffins (April-July) with a fascinating history. It’s possible to visit on a day trip (two-hour crossing) launching from Ilfracombe Harbour (five miles). The edge of Exmoor National Park is also about five miles from site with Heddon Valley one of the most beautiful places to explore at this western end of the park. All of the Devon Coast is connected by the South West Coast Path so there’s plenty of great coastal walking too.

Food and drink

Woolacombe has plenty of options for eating and drinking out from takeaway fish and chips, beach cafes, pasty shops and pubs to the rather nice Beach House Restaurant. There’s a small beach cafe at Barricane Beach where you can get drinks and snacks during the day which does authentic Sri Lankan curry in the evening in summer. Mortehoe village (less than two miles) has two pubs: The Ship Aground and The Chichester Arms which both do food. In the nearby village of Lee (two miles) The Grampus Inn offers home-cooked food and real ales brewed on site. If you want to cook on site, there are small convenience shops in Woolacombe and Mortehoe for the basics. For more than that, head to Ilfracombe (five miles) for independent shops and supermarkets.
