A cosy and luxurious shepherds hut for two on a beautiful farm in the Wessex Downs.

It's only right that you can stay in a shepherd's hut at Folly Farm in Berkshire. After all, this is very much a shepherd's setting. The farm covers the chalky landscape where the Chiltern Hills meet the North Wessex Downs – the sort of quintessentially English scenery you might expect in a Hardy novel – and there are sheep, as well as cows, in the surrounding meadows. You don't need to be a shepherd to stay here though. The 'Little Fleece' hut is not exactly a humble abode. With an en-suite shower room, a wood-fired pizza oven and an outdoor bathtub where you can soak and enjoy the stars, this is a rural escape where you can secretly enjoy a little pampering. It's a fine place for a holiday in the hills.

Just a few hundred yards from the Ridgeway National Trail, Little Fleece at Folly Farm is an entirely self contained shepherd's hut and the only accommodation on site, so you really have the place to yourself. Inside it has everything you need, with a clever layout that maximises the space. The double bed, for example, folds away into the wall to reveal a seating and dining area below, while the kitchen is cleverly compact yet still has everything you could possibly need, including a fridge, sink, hobs and a kettle. A wood-burner keeps the whole place snug and cosy – a particularly delight in the winter months when you'll delight in hearing the rain tap-a-tapping on the corrugated roof – while the en-suite shower room has an excellent shower as well as thoughtful little touchers, like the British-made shampoo bars and toiletries. In all, owners David and Jane and their daughter Tory, have clearly thought every detail through. Though there's a hairdryer, bathrobes and a welcome pack with jams and cakes, there is no WiFi and they haven't installed a television. This is a place for enjoying your immediate surroundings, not scrolling through TV channels.

And what surroundings they are. Outside your hut there's a grass and gravel area where you can make use of the pizza oven and barbecue pit, while, beyond, footpaths lead up on to the ridgeway or in to the local village where there's a welcoming, family-run pub overlooking the cricket pitch. Rise early and you'll catch the sight of horses riding out on the downs as you walk the ridgeway – there are several gallops in the area where racers let off steam – and there's also a good chance of spotting the best of the local wildlife in the morning hours. Come evening, meanwhile, and there's only one place to be. The wood-fired bathtub, shielded by a screen of woven hazel but otherwise open to the elements, is a perfect place to gaze at the stars. If it rains it can be all the more atmospheric and the perfect place to soak before retreating back into the hut with a good book.

An absolutely fantastic stay at the peaceful Little Fleece on Folly Farm. We had a great break, the shepherd’s hut has everything you might want for a cosy break, and the hot tub is incredible! Jane and David were lovely hosts, and gave us all the information we needed. Only thing we would have changed was to have stayed another night!

Loved staying the night at Jane's. The hut was so well kept and extremely comfortable. Waking up to the sounds and smells of the country side made our morning. Jane was extremely attentive and a wonderful host. We will definitely be back xxxx S and A

Welcome to Little Fleece shepherds hut at Folly Farm in an AONB on the North Wessex Downs near the Ridgeway National Trail. Far reaching views over the fields can be seen from the hut which is set in the paddock next to the farmhouse but you are completely private. Little Fleece was lovingly made by skilled craftspeople in Somerset and is equipped with everything you need. David, Jane and daughter Tory run a working beef, sheep and arable farm. Cattle graze in the field behind the paddock during the summer months and the sheep will be grazing on the farm wherever the grass is tastiest! A game shoot runs on the farm September to February. Little Fleece is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life with no TV or Wi-Fi, so come and recharge in the Berkshire countryside and reconnect with nature. Listen to the farm animals, wild birds, at dawn/dusk as you may see the farm’s resident barn owl. Walk, cycle and explore the local area. Unwind with a book and a cuppa and the homemade biscuits provided, or for the ultimate relaxation, lounge in the outdoor wood-fired freshwater bath tub with a glass of bubbly.
Nearby attractions

Little Fleece is just a few hundred yards south of the Ridgeway National Trail, a spectacular walking route that runs through the chalky Chiltern Hills and, as the name suggests, follows a ridge right through to the Wessex Downs further west. If you're an early riser you might see local race horses training on the gallops en route. Once on the trail, you can follow the well-marked route or detour off on other smaller footpaths. In particular, it's a 15-minute walk (down hill) to the village pub, The Harrow (01635 281260) in West Ilsley, which overlooks the cricket field. If your on the hunt for heritage, it's half an hour's drive to Highclere Castle (01635 253210), now better known as the fictional Downton Abbey, and it's the same to Oxford, where you can go punting, exploring the colleges or duck into museums on a rainy day. For museums, the nearby Didcot Railway Centre (01235 817200) is also well worth visiting.

Food and drink

The nearest pub is the family-run Harrow (01635 281260) in West Ilsley, full of horse-racing-related memorabilia and overlooking the cricket field. In East Ilsley you'll find the Crown and Horns (1635281545) – walkable in about 50 minutes or a five-minute drive. Further afield, a particular pick of the pubs is The Bell Inn at Aldworth (01635 578272; 15 minutes' drive) – it's been in the same family for over two centuries and was recently CAMRA’s 'Pub of the Year' – while The Eyston Arms at East Hendred (01235 833320) is particularly good for food.
