Bell tents in a riverside orchard on a Gloucestershire farm

Pitched between the plum and apple trees of riverside Broadway Farm are four bell tents. They look right at home here: traditional-style tents in a traditional orchard that’s farmed using age-old techniques. This feels very much like old-school camping where you sleep under canvas, cook on the campfire, and perhaps pick fruit from the trees. But it’s all quite the illusion as, while you can enjoy the simple beauty of the site, you don’t have to do any of the hard work. This nostalgic and enchanting site is all set up for you. The tents are pitched, the beds are made, and logs for your campfire are provided.

The bell tents are off grid but there’s a campers’ kitchen in a farm building that offers some handy mod cons including a microwave, fridge, and kettle. It’s in here that you’ll find the facilities too: flushing loos, hot water showers, and butler sinks to wash up in. It’s the work of Hannah and Will, who are raising their family alongside sheep and pigs on Broadway Farm. They’ll let your kids share in this lifestyle too while you’re holidaying here – with the chance to join in at animal feeding time.

The site is located on the banks of the River Severn between Gloucester and Cinderford. It’s the edge of the Forest of Dean and not far from The Cotswolds. That means there’s plenty of off-grid adventuring to be had off site too. You can go for bike rides and walks in the Forest of Dean or in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. There are plenty of pretty villages to explore and lots of very good places to feast on local produce. Perhaps none quite as good or as local as at Broadway Farm itself where you can buy sausages and lamb for the barbecue that’s been reared, free range, right here.

The Kernel (Sleeps 4)
It’s rained but 10/10 stay 🥳
Really lovely set up. Lots of space around each tent and all felt very safe and private. The toilets and showers were brill and it was lovely to have a fridge and microwave. Everything was clean and set out very well. Out of 2adults, 2 boys and a dog we would definitely return.

The Kernel (Sleeps 4)
Fun camping on a farm.
Had an lovely 3 night stay at Broadway farm in a family bell tent. Will and Hannah are lovely hosts and ready to help if needed. Brilliant location close to lots of local attractions. Nice to stay on a working farm, our little one enjoyed seeing the animals and got stuck in feeding the pigs. Facilities were nearby to the tents and always clean. Look forward to visit again sometime in the future. Good luck to Will and Hannah on their endevour.

The Kernel (Sleeps 4)
The site was in a gorgeous old grassy orchard on the farm with lots of space between the 4 bell tents (not that it mattered as we had the place to ourselves!). Loads of space for playing and off-lead time for our dog. The tent was great and totally kitted out with everything we needed, including tealights, fairy lights and even houseplants to make it more cosy ☺️. Fire pit/BBQ and picnics table outside was ideal and they provided coals and wood. Cider and farm food were available to buy too. Toilet and shower block and communal area were in the next field and a muddy walk away (we had some rain); we made good use of the board games provided and the showers were nice and hot 👍. The kids adored helping to feed the pigs, herd the sheep, meet the horses and collect eggs from the hens. The location was good, with easy walks through the fields and along the river. We could hear the traffic from the busy main road so it wasn’t totally quiet but it felt lovely and secluded. It was only 2 days but we had a fab time thank you so much!

The Kernel (Sleeps 4)
We had a lovely time, there were four of us and we stayed at The Kernel. Will and his wife (whose name I can't remember I'm sorry!!) were so friendly and accommodating and the space was beautifully decorated and cosy. I'm sure I will be staying again!

Orchard Bell Tents
Farm camping
My family and I had the best time in Will and Hannah's orchard bell tent. Such a beautiful place, perfect spot for a relaxing few days. Will and Hannah were really helpful - lovely to meet their pigs! Yummy breakfasts and barbeques with their own sausages and burgers. We'll definitely be back, with friends...

From the host
Come and stay on our little bend in the river. Broadway is surrounded on three sides by the magnificent River Severn in west Gloucestershire, a stone’s throw from the Forest of Dean and The Cotswolds. We are a working farm, rearing livestock and growing traditional varieties of fruit and cider apples. The majority of the land is traditional orchard, unchanged for decades so is rich in biodiversity and hosts a variety of species of wildlife. Just a few days here and you’ll feel life slow down as Broadway takes you back to how things were done in the old days.
Nearby attractions

A guest map of Broadway Farm Glamping shows you walking routes around the orchards, meadows and up to the riverbank where there’s a public footpath. Less than three miles down the road, the National Trust’s Westbury Court Gardens are another nice place for a waterside wander as they are the only Dutch-style water garden in the UK. A good place to start any exploration of the nearby Forest of Dean is the Dean Heritage Centre (eight miles) where there are five museums, all with exhibitions on the local area. There’s also a Gruffalo-themed woodland trail which is fun for younger kids. They might also enjoy Puzzlewood, an enchanting adventure park in an ancient forest (14 miles). There are plenty of mountain biking trails in the Forest, suitable for all ages, and the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre is a hub and a hire centre that’s 11 miles from site. For wild swimming head into the Wye Valley and to Lower Lydford where there’s a popular spot for confident swimmers. It’s not much further (17 miles) to Symonds Yat, where there’s a great lookout across a bend in the River Wye, canoeing and climbing opportunities too. The city of Gloucester (seven miles), with its cathedral, castle gardens, museum, docks and shops makes for an interesting day out. Beyond Gloucester is the edge of The Cotswolds National Landscape where there are lots of good walks, well-to-do villages and great gastro pubs.

Food and drink

Broadway Farm produces its own meat which you can order in advance from the farm’s online shop. If you want more local produce, head just a mile down the road to The Barn at Severn and Wye which touts itself as Gloucestershire’s number one foodie destination. The food hall there provides a place to pick up local cheese, fish and meat (among other things) much of which has been smoked in the on-site smokery. And if you don’t fancy cooking, you can eat in at the cafe or AA-rosette restaurant. The Severn Bore Inn is the closest pub to the farm (half a mile) with a menu of pub classics. It’s a popular spot to watch The Bore (the tidal surge that sweeps along the River Severn at certain times of year). Freehouse, The Lyon Inn (two miles), is a bit further away in Westbury but serves good food from changing menus. There’s a convenience store at a garage a mile from the farm on the A48 but for more than the basics, there are more shops and eateries in Cinderford and Gloucester (both seven miles).
