There’s something missing at The Black Swan’s glamping site in the Yorkshire Dales. It’s got an amazing location in a national park, a pub just steps away and all the campsite staples except the kitchen sink. There’s simply no place to wash up here – but it’s all quite deliberate, of course, because you’ll have nothing to wash up. The three yurts are set up in the lovely riverside garden of a top-notch Cumbrian inn with a two-rosette restaurant. A hearty Cumbrian breakfast is included in your stay and if you’d rather be washing up a blackened bean pan in the campsite kitchen than dining in the cosy bar or elegant restaurant then you’d better go elsewhere.

The glamping here is hotel-style, developed by Louise and Alan Dinnes, who have owned The Black Swan with its 17 rooms for more than a decade. They dipped their toe into the world of glamping with bell tents a couple of years ago and, with the idea proved, they’ve now upped their glamping game to yurts. These Yorkshire-built roundhouses stand up better to the Cumbrian weather and, thanks to their log-burning stoves, offer year-round accommodation. Beds are made up, towels, robes and slippers are included and there are tea and coffee making facilities too. These are hotel rooms out in the garden. It’s only the compost loo and the open-air woodland shower that separates them from the indoors – and a babbling beck with a little bridge that separates them from the pub garden.

The yurts each have their own space in a little woodland that’s shared with free range chickens and wild red squirrels. There’s outdoor seating and a log burner for each as well as a communal fire pit and a rope swing. Glampers can also use the tennis courts and three-hole mini golf course which are just off-site in the village of Ravenstonedale. It’s a pretty place in the Eden Valley, beneath the Howgill Fells. It’s just inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park with the Lake District only a 30-minute drive away. To make the most of all these places you might want to come by car but you can also get here on foot, as it’s not far off Wainwright’s Coast-to-Coast route, or by train as the scenic Carlisle-Settle Railway has a stop at nearby Kirkby Stephen. To be frank, we don’t care how you get here but if you’re looking for luxury glamping in the Yorkshire Dales we’d advise you to get here if you can.

We loved staying in our yurt , so many extra little touches like a water bowl , treats and poop bags for our pooch , the bed was so comfy and the log burner kept us toastie , breakfast at the hotel across the road was included in the price and didn't disappoint, it was delicious and plenty of it , we would definitely come again .

Hygge Yurt
Best of both worlds
Fantastic stay all round. The yurt was fitted out superbly. The wood-burner an outstanding touch. Super comfortable sleep in a fantastic bed. One of the key draws was that we would be eating / drinking in the pub. Which was superb. The staff were delightful and the food at breakfast and dinner was superb. So long as you’re relatively ‘sturdy’, be aware that the outdoor shower is rather bracing. Not moaning - just saying - but I might be less laid back as autumn and winter descends. Just a fantastic stay and nothing to highlight as a ‘watch out’.

Lovely quiet site by a river, very peaceful and comfortable. Absolutely immaculate. All the amenities we needed, pub food was fabulous and staff were all very attentive and friendly. Took two small dogs and it was perfect for them.

Hygge Yurt
One of our favourite stays yet!
Everything about this stay was perfect. Such a beautiful, quiet little village. A beautiful, cosy Yurt with the most comfiest bed! We where a little unsure about staying in a Yurt in February but with the fire, not once did we feel cold. Was lucky to have such a magical night too. The most stars/shooting stars we have ever seen, it was incredible! The Pub food was amazing and the staff where super friendly. We wanted to stay longer!!

Viking Yurt
Absolutely gorge
Nestled beside a river in a enchanting forest grove yet within 50 feet of the quaint and cozy Black Swan hotel for dining and drinks. Lots of thoughtful aspects to the Yurt and it’s surroundings. Would have loved to stay longer.

Our three, brand new wood and canvas yurts are nestled in our private, woodland hotel garden beside the beautiful conservation (SSSI) river of Scandal Beck. Just a short drive from The Lake District, The Yorkshire and Durham Dales as well as The Scottish Border, we are perfectly located for you to explore. The yurts themselves are individually decorated with full size furniture, electricity and double beds. The yurts are all located in the garden of The Black Swan Hotel, Ravenstonedale, a multi award-winning hotel, restaurant and bar; recipient of 2 AA Rosettes as well as AA pub of the year for England 2018/19. As part of your stay in our yurts you will receive a full cooked breakfast and buffet option included in the price for 2 people in our hotel restaurant. We like to think of ourselves as a cosy home from home with a relaxed dining atmosphere throughout. We are very dog friendly in the hotel, restaurant, bar and yurts so please bring your furry family members. Our beautiful woodland is also home to red squirrels (which are seen daily), protected, freshwater crayfish in the river, an otter (seen very infrequently but the nemesis of our ducks), 6 Indian runner ducks, free range chickens and our two cockerels! (Dogs are very welcome but are to be kept on a lead whilst in the woodland itself). We are very dog friendly and charge an additional fee of £15 for 1 dog/ £20 for 2 dogs for an additional cleaning fee and for some dog friendly goodies such as poop bags and treats. The price of this yurt is based on an occupancy of 2 people. Any other people who will be staying on the sofa bed will add a charge of £40 per person per night for breakfast and their stay. All yurts come with electrical battery pack, chargeable lanterns, tea/coffee, homemade biscuits, log burning stoves, towels, full breakfast included from the hotel, an outdoor seating area and access to our outdoor toasty warm woodland shower as well as our very cute, wooden toilet cabin. Hairdryers are available in the hotel for your use.
Nearby attractions

The pub is situated within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and close to the eastern edge of the Lake District National Park – just half an hour from Windermere, so there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure and sightseeing. Cumbria Classic Coaches (01539 623254) operates heritage bus tours from the village and the Stone Trail Riding Centre offer horse riding and mountain bike hire. The Coast-to-Coast walk passes nearby and the scenic Carlisle-Settle Railway’s Kirby Stephen station is just a mile down the road. There are plenty of lovely market towns nearby too including Kirkby Stephen just five miles away with Settle, Penrith, Kirkby Lonsdale and Barnard Castle within a half-hour drive.

Food and drink

You don’t need to look far for good food as you’re camping in the back garden of The Black Swan with its AA Two-Rosette restaurant. A hearty Cumbrian breakfast for two is included in the price of your stay and eating dinner there is not only a highlight of your stay but a necessary delight as there are no cooking facilities at the yurt (although tea and coffee facilities are included). The pub can also provide packed lunches for days out or picnic meals. For more supplies, Kirkby Stephen has a good selection of shops five miles down the road.
